Going Home
by Rodney Foster

Aye, hear nah man, ah does cyar wait fuh de plane tuh land in Piarco.
Ah does be excited too bad.
Meh heart does be beating like ah bass drum: Boom-boom, boom-boom, boom-boom.
From de time de plane pull out from Barbados ah does start tuh get excited;
Especially wen dey playin some steelband music; some tunes from Panorama.
Boy, meh heart does start tuh gallop like racehorse pounding round de Savannah;
Brigidup, brigidup, brigidup, brigidup.
If is ah daytime flight, ah does be looking out tuh see if ah could spot meh pardners limin in Boobs Lane, Barataria.
Yuh ever really check out Trinidad from up in de air?
Is an breathtaking view.
We island real nice, oui.
Yes, boy, ah does cyar wait tuh touch ground, Trini soil.
Me and meh country does embrace as de place an ground rush to greet each other.
Ah does try tuh act all cool an social,
But ah sure de sparkle in meh eyes, de bounce in meh steps an de loud poundin ah meh heart does give meh away.

For me returnin home is like coming back tuh yuh lover after ah lon, long absence. Ah does want to do ah million tings: touch, dance, sing, kiss, cry, laugh, talk, feel, stand back and admire an, above all, give thanks tuh God fuh bringin me safely back home.

Man, is good tuh be in love wit yuh country; tuh return tuh de womb,
Tuh come back home an revitalize yuh very soul an recharge yuh battery.
Is spiritually upliftin.
Yuh know wat ah mean?
Wat about Customs and Immigration?
Boy, dat doh bother me.
Me eh smugglin nothin, so meh head cool.
Tuh besides ah have dual citizenship now
So ah does go on de U.S. citizenship line.
Dat does be de shortest.
Yuh tink it easy, nah.
As soon as ah reach outside an ah greet meh sister, Doreen, meh nephew, Brent an meh niece Maria, I ready tuh move.
If yuh hear meh:
Aye, Pet, pass thru Curepe fuh meh.
We pass Tacarigua "voosh" an pull up "screech" on de Southern Main Road.

Ah jump out de car an ah shout out:
"Aye, Jambo, run some hot doubles, dey.
Put plenty pepper an kuchela."
"How much yuh want?"
"Man, just run de doubles, nah.
I go tell tuh wen tuh stop.
Miss Lady gimme ah red Solo, dey.
Firl, yuh know how long I eh eat some good doubles.
Yes, Jambo, keep dem comin.
Aye, Batawah, cut ah some soft jelly dey.
Yuh know how long I eh drink some good coconut water.
Yes, Batawah, dis is de dman ting self.
Run another one; same bunch.
Aye, Pet, pay del bill, ah go fix yuh up tomorrow wen ah change up meh U.S.
Come leh we check out de puddin lady.
Oh Gawd, look at dah line.
"Goodnite Miss Gertrude, yuh boy jus lan an ah dyin fuh ah taste ah yuh puddin.
Allyuh could excuse meh jus dis one time;
Ah only want ah lil piece, half pound.
O.K. fellas?
Thank yuh very much Miss Gertrude.
Yuh save meh life."
"But Rod, if yuh eat all dem set ah ting,
Yuh eh go have room fuh yuh mother fish broth?"
"Fish wat?"
"Gyul, yuh makin joke or wat.
I always have toom fuh ah good fish broth.
Look, come leh we go home.
Oh lawd, Trinidad sweet too bad.
Ah love it.
It sweet, it sweet, my Trinidad sweet."
