Materials:
- 8mm cord - 30 yards
- 12" rod
- 10mm wood beads for eyes
- 3" wood rings - 2
Directions:
- Stain or paint wood rings and rod if desired. Wood rings will be eglued
around the eye beads when owl is completed.
- Cut 10 cords each 3 yards long and mount on rod using Lark's Head mounting
knot.
- Push aside cords 1 & 2 and 19 & 20 for later use.
With remaining 16 cords, tie square knot on each group of 4 cords.
- Alternate, and continue square knot pattern, dropping 2 cords from
each side until you have 1 square knot (4 rows alternating square knot
pattern to form forehead).
- Using cords 1 & 2 as a "carrier" (2 cords working
as 1), tie double half hitches with each cord working diagonally outside
to center continuing the shaping of the forehead. Repeat with cords 19
& 20 (working as 1 "carrier") working diagonally
from outside to the center.
- With the center 4 cords, tie 5 square knots and roll to form "button"
knot for beak. Tie a square knot below roll to secure "button"
in place.
- For row under the eyes, take center two cords as "carriers"
and tie angling diagonal double half hitch row to the left and then to
the right, working from center to outer edge of body. String eye bead on
5th cord from outer edge before tying double half hitch with that cord,
shaping as you knot.

- Follow the detailed diagram and continue witih owl's body, checking
as you go. When completed, ends may be left to hang, or 4 cords may be
tied (double half hitches) over branch for feet. Glue wood rings in place
over eye beads.
