New Zealand Crafts in Felt
A W-Camp '98 Swap

The award for the longest distance travelled to W-Camp went to Debra from Wellington, NZ. Debra graciously hosted a well-attended, fun workshop on how to make Maori Poi. Unfortunately Debra didn't have any written directions for making the poi so I had to muddle through on my own for that page,  but she was kind enough to send me a copy of her instructions for her wonderful swaps made from felt.  They included:

Note: in New Zealand a kiwi is a nocturnal bird which is the national emblem of NZ; the brown fuzzy fruit with green inside that in the U.S. we simply call "kiwi"  is called a kiwifruit.

When you have made the crafts, add a safety pin to the back for a hat craft/swap or magnetic tape to make magnets.

Kiwi: Cut out two ovals -- one in Kiwi colour and the second in either the Kiwi colour or the contrast used for beak and feet. Cut out one beak and two feet. (Best results with Kiwi in a mid brown and beak and feet in gold yellow.) Use craft glue to attach feet to the second oval shape. Glue first oval on top -- feet should be tucked inside like a sandwich with most the feet sticking out. Finally glue in place googly eyes and beak.

Kiwifruit: Cut out two ovals -- one in Kiwifruit colour and the second in either the Kiwifruit colour or green. Cut out the leaf shape and a semi-circle for the mouth in green. To make the mouth, glue a small white semi-circle onto the larger green one. With a black permanent marker, mark in the lines so that the mouth looks like the inside of a Kiwifruit. Put together the same way as the Kiwi, the leaf glued between the two large ovals. Finally glue in place googly eyes and mouth. Use larger size eyes for the Kiwifruit.

Sheep: Cut out two sheep shapes from the template. Cut out one head and two feet. (Feet are thin rectangles.) Colours for sheep: white, cream, or black contrasted with a bright colour. You can make either the wool the bright colour or the head and feet the bright color. These are also put together the same way as the Kiwi -- the feet are glued between the two sheep shapes. Finally glue in place the head and the googly eyes.

Bungy Jumpers: To make a bungy jumping platform, cut two small rectangles or semi-circles out of spare felt. (Use up scraps for this.)  Cut a piece of shirring elastic -- white or black depending on the colour of your creation. Use craft glue to secure this to the bungy platform and right down the middle of the oval which is the base of your Kiwi or sheep, leaving about 4cm of elastic showing between the two pieces. The elastic will them remain secure when the "sandwich" is put together.

Kiwi: Cut two ovals, two feet and a beak as in ordinary Kiwi. Feet and beak are glued in place along with the bungy cord before the top oval and the top bungy platform piece are glued on. Finally glue on the googly eyes.

Sheep: Cut out one oval, one sheep shape (note the shape is slightly different from the sheep body for the standing sheep), one head (use the template for the standing sheep), and four legs. The legs are glued in place along with the  bungy cord before the sheep shape and the top bungy platform piece are glued on. Finally glue the head and the googly eyes in place. You need to be careful where you place the glue on the head as the head overlaps the end of the sheep shape for the bungy sheep.

Look at the diagrams if you are confused by the written instructions. Use your imaginations and have fun!
