This page is dedicated to the disassembly and possible restoration of my newest toy, a 1979 MGB roadster. This wonderful piece of British craftsmanship was given to me by a family friend after it was decommissioned as a decorative lawn feature. There is only one word that can describe this car, and that word is...RUST!
Click on the following descrptions for an image of the work currently underway, and feel free to email me with suggestions on what I can possibly do to save the 475,526th MGB off the Abingdon assembly line.
| Nov02 - Assessing the damage. Dashboard pic and rotten steering wheel. |
Nov02
- A close-up of the guages. At least everything is here. |
Nov02
- The engine before disassembly. Things looked pretty ugly! |
Nov02
- Various hoses and emissions equipment. All of this will have to be removed. |
Nov02
- Gotta love that Lucas wiring! All wiring will have to be removed and
rewound. |
| Nov02
- Ah! The rust under and within the driver's side sill. All of this will
have to be cut out and replaced |
Nov02
- The passenger side sill is actually in a little better shape, but still
in dire need of repair. |
Nov02
- The rear fender will need to be cut out and replaced as well, on both
sides. |
Dec02
- After taking out the seats and carpet. Here's the battery box. |
Dec02
- A dashboard panorama |
| Dec02
- The typical MGB door crack problem. Both doors will need to be reskinned,
but the frames are OK. |
Dec02
- The passenger side floor. I'll cut and replace the whole thing. |
Dec02
- This ain't good! This hole belongs to the rear suspension mount. |
Apr03
- The driver floor. I'm hoping the rust doesn't creep up under the firewall... |
Apr03
- Stripping the engine down. Here I have removed the radiator, air pump,
and alternator. |
| Apr03
- From this angle you can see I have removed the intake/exhaust manifold. |
Apr03
- Here's a pic of the firewall with some more hardware removed. I wonder
what lives in there! |
Apr03
- A scary pic inside an exhaust port. |
Apr03
- The intake/exhaust manifold and cat converter removed. |
Apr03
- The transmission mount removed. This will have to be restored and treated
to prevent corrosion. |
More to come!
