Bancroft Grade 4 Online Workshop

A Simple Fact:

The only way that using the Internet, or technology in general, is going to be successful for you is if you can find ways of using it to enhance your current curriculum without significantly extending or complicating your lessons. However, you must accept the fact that in learning or applying anything new there must always be some additional time invested.

1. Starting Things Off

Begin the year with:

a) An intro to the Web & Web Browser

b) How about a scavenger hunt ( to familiarize them with navigation)

(e.g. cybersurfari)

c) Treasure Hunt -http://www.eduplace.com/projects/treasure.html

(alternate) QUIA http://www.quia.com/sh/1000.html

d) Sample- Read Across America Scavenger Hunt

http://www.springfield.k12.pa.us/elm/scavenger.html

e) Then a talk on plagiarism and citing sources (see worksheet)

f) A lesson on saving, copying and pasting (pictures and text)

Pictures

Place your mouse of the picture to be copied.

Click and Hold (a window opens and displays a number of choices)

Select either: Copy Image to Clipboard or Save Image to Disk

Text

Highlight the text you want to copy, then go to EDIT, and select "Copy"

Open a new Clarisworks document

From EDIT, "Paste" the text onto that new document

If you’re in Hyperstudio, simply "Paste" the text you copied onto a card

g) What you can and can’t do on these computers (limitations of tech and software) - avoid .ra , .avi, .pdf , and anything that requires downloading

ra = Real Audio avi = PC Video format pdf = Adobe Acrobat File

See if you can download and install Adobe Acrobat reader from this site :

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

2.Record Keeping

Encourage using a site to list assignments and web sites to use.

(e.g.) schoolnotes.com, ikeepbookmarks.com, Bancroft school web site

On these sites you might list the web sites for your class to use in a current project. It might also have the project itself listed here.

Advantages : Can work on at school and from home (flexible)

Don’t have to type in URLs (saves time)

Parents know the assignment (communication)

3. Search Engines and Directories

Web search engines (discourage wide use) Too time consuming

-general info (http://www.searchengines.com)

http://www.searchengineshowdown.com/reviews/

-refining your search using advanced search features

-search engines for students

( Yahooligans, Kid’s Tools, Ask Jeeves For Kids, Searchopolis, KidsClick )
