[serious drinking] A Night of Serious Drinking - One After Another - self-released
Based in San Francisco, this trio creates an instantaneous atmosphere with their jazzy, moody croon-pop - a dark bar of old wood, ruby red velvet banquettes and a 3-piece combo in black suits massaging moods. Touchstones for ANOSD clearly include Tindersticks, Nick Drake, early Bowie, a touch of Beatles. This beautiful LP was recorded live as one suite in one take at a SF club, though the impeccable production would never let you guess it (all tracks are indexed). Sophisticated, sensitive, warm and very...new. No profanity. Last 2 trks remixes. Recommended are trks 1-11!
[crumar] Phil Crumar - As It Goes - Asphodel
What do you get when you cross Beck, Day One and Rob Swift? Possibly something that sounds like Phil Crumar's EP (yes, like the "Crumar" synthesizer). In fact, Phil is graced on this debut by the scratching of the one-and-only Rob Swift (trk2) as well as the capable DJ Marz (trk3). This ep is a fun, uncomplicated, funny and smart piece of work, solid and unpretentious. Crumar started out playing drums in the "go-go swing" style as a youngin' in D.C. and later expanded his repertoire after relocating to SF. Trk4 is an instrumental while the other 3 offer introspection on day to day life. No profanity.
[dj food] DJ Food - Kaleidoscope - Ninja Tune
Yet again blurring the line between jazz & electronic hip hop (when did that line appear anyway?), the chefs at Ninja feed us this trippy dish of dark, soundtracky head music. DJ Food is primarily Strictly Kevin & Patrick Carpenter, but often includes others, such as: Bundy K. Brown (Tortoise) trk 1; Ken Nordine's word-jazz trk5. Trk2 is a punchy, schizo lil' item; trk3 has a canny staccato rap; trk7 a verrry cool, funky, psychedelic 70s vibed work perfect for a 3am NYC lounge scene; trk9 is a dream/nightmare of terrific beauty & atmosphere. No profanity. Cinematic Orch. fans take note!
[fink] Fink - Fresh Produce - Ninja Tune
DJs happy about the recent spate of rich, delicious electro- lounge productions from Ninja will be pleased with this fully satisfying LP which is the clubbier/loungier cousin to Cinematic Orchestra. Drawing inspiration from dub, soul, r&b, break beats, electro, trance, jazz - all the good stuff - this LP''s sounds & vibes work just as well in a bar, car or bedroom. Many mixed tempo electro excursions & trancey trips, ie. trk6 reminicent of the Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" remade for vinyl junkies; Ultramarine is another touchstone. Trk10 a fave; trk2 nice beats. A "shit" early in trk4, otherwise all clean.
[infesticons] Infesticons - Gun Hill Road - Ninja Tune
Bronx-based crew lead by Mike Ladd (Anti-Pop Consortium) with a mission to put down "jiffification" of hip hop culture. Read the liner notes if the unique, humorous sci-fly narrative interests you. Tho very much centered in rap, this LP is wide ranging in styles, often laying down very sly beats & musty funk seasoned with organ and guitar. The raps are definitely on a higher mental level & very creative - no bullshit clichés here. There are more tracks with profanity than without, tho much of it is hard to catch: but preview if that's important to you. Feat. EL-P & Mr. Lif (Company Flow).
[kid koala] Kid Koala - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Ninja Tune
"You got your stacks of wax...." Kid Koala's stacks are mile high, which is what it took to make this his "hand cut" debut LP. Turntables, scratching, loops, etc.? Yeah, but this is no demonstration LP- it's a record-record. With songs. Fun. Music! Not only crazy mad skillz. Standout grooves include: Trk 3, 5, 11. Steinski influence on trks 6 & 13. Don't miss trks 7 & 12. Kid's done records with or for DJ Vadim, Coldcut, Peanut Butter Wolf, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Money Mark, to name some. No profanity. Just crazy sounds, smart ass humor and tha ill beats.
[like wow] Like Wow - Burn, World, Burn - Psychoteddy [TOUR SCHEDULE]
Rock Noir - shadowy, smokey, whiskey fueled and burning down the dark highway in a '55 Chevy with the windows open and the one large scratchie speaker in the dash cranking out the AM radio; well worn copies of Kerouac & Thompson on the back seat. Bad Seeds, Gunga Din, Congo Norvell, Valentine Six are all relevant reference points. Dark, surreal & addled, yes, but not with out a sense of humor. Trk4 fun dark thrift store tale; trk6 odd old 50's cover; trk2 gear jammed joyride; trk7 raw bluesy grind. All clean except "fucking" trk8.
[marshmallow coast] Marshmallow Coast - Time Square - Spare Me Records
You've probably played his Kindercore LP like mad, so sink your teeth into the latest, greatest effort by Andy Gonzales (The Tapes, Of Montreal). He offers up 9+ sweet songs that seem curiously bent by a trip through a warped pop kaleidoscope. Sparse instrumentation, stripped down production, simple yet powerful emotion, super catchy songwriting & unexpected tweaks make this a very special, presonal album that's easy to love. Though fragile & delicate, these clever & endearing songs still have much substance. Check trks 8 (very trippy), 3, 4, 6. No profanity. 1 song with "cat" in the title (trk8).
[mercenaries] Mercenaries - How Sweet the Sound - Spare Me Records
The Mercenaries decidedly represent the "rock n' roll" side of Spare Me. 1/2 Amercian and 1/2 Canadian, they could just as easily work the bar rock scene as the basement club circuit. Blending good ol' rawk with a country twinge on some tracks & working class lyrics, they might remind you a bit of X, a lot of Warren Zevon (trks 5, 6), maybe Replacements, GBV or (dare I say it) the Eagles. That's not too surprising when you learn that they have a connection to Ronnie Hawken (The Band). The "Come On Song" is a classic (clean version trk 14). Rockers include trks 12, 4, 5. All clean but "fuck" trk2.
[mmm cyclops] Mixmaster Mike - Eye Of The Cyclops - Asphodel
Mixmaster Mike's latest EP is another space invaders' attack on the turntables: 4 tracks full of sonik adventures, phat and phunky beats, layered skratching, and kool grooves. While still offering up the tongue in cheek humor found on his last album, this EP showcases the evolution of Mike from talented turntablist to serious scratchologist. Swans bassist Joe Goldring helps MMM defend us against the giant robot. All tracks clean. (Each track is broken up into subtracks meant to be played as one. This EP works well when played in entirety as one seamless 20 min. set.)
[scaries] The Scaries - Wishing One Last Time - Route 14 Records
Fast, driving, fast-driving, pop-punk. For real. They're the kind of band that tours all the time, plays anywhere and is in a constant state of pop-agitation. Listening to this, their 2nd full-length, you're sure that they never stand still and can be relied upon to be constantly jumping off their amps while ripping through the chords. From Chapel Hill, NC. Fans of Descendants, Look Out, Gern will appreci- ate. Too loud & fast to be muppet-punk, but lyrics focus- ing mainly on boy-girl issues puts them squarely in the emo zone. Cure cover trk9. Clean except "Fuck" trk 6&7.
[melissa sheehan] Melissa Sheehan - Goodnight Curve - Goodnight Records
On this debut full-length Melissa Sheehan demonstrates the captivating power of simplicity. Her soothing voice possesses a warm and liquid quality that falls quietly over this gorgeous collection of songs. The music lurks in that indescribable category of 'slow and beautiful.' Sheehan's lyrics are large and evocative, rife with poetic imagery. Her style might remind you of Mary Timony - if Helium were to cover Vic Chesnutt. A somewhat surreal cover of 'Moon River' ("more like a scripted conversation in a rat pack bar") showcases a duet with Chris Whitley. All clean.
[amon tobin] Amon Tobin - Supermodified - Ninja Tune
The 4th LP from Brazilian-born/British-based Amon Tobin is a dark, heavy, luxuriant, dreamlike soundtrack of the Hitchcock/Bladerunner sort. Mysterious, shadowy vibes are cast against a lounge background repleate with jazz elements and D&B beats. A noisy, warped film-noir soundtrack composed by combining Witchman & Cinematic Orchestra. An excellent adventure in sound with standouts: trks 1, 3, 8. Ouch: trk 7 - giant insects eating your brain, courtesy of Quadraceptor. All clean.
[harpsichord] various artists - Harpsichord 2000 - Shado Records (Italy)
A stereophonic journey into the world of the analogue and archaic, this LP captures the golden tone of the mighty harpsichord, spinetta, clavinet and clavichord. Each song was selected to showcase that special mood that only these magniloquent, luxurious instruments could contribute to the psychedelic baroque pop, the heavy urban funk and evocative Italian film scores of the 60s and 70s. All tracks on this comp. are exclusive, including contributions from Stereo Total, Momus, The Make Up, Cinerama, Count Indigo - and the list goes on!
[songs in the key of z] various artists - Songs In the Key of Z - Which Records
Outsider Musicians -- has their time finally come? Of course not -- it never will. But give an ear: Key of Z is the CD companion to a new book about musicians who are "so wrong, they're right." Key of Z celebrates marginal figures, underdogs, and those blessed with imperfect pitch. A few familiar, some obscure; many humorous, others painful. Noted outre champion & "landmark preservationist" Irwin Chusid wrote the book, compiled the CD & wrote the liner notes. If ever an album was destined for the top of every non-profit station's playlist, this is it! Trk16 "fuck'.
