Objectives

The Extension Comittee offers a number of courses that demonstrate the importance of a psychoanalytically informed understanding of mental functioning to the development of clinical skills in psychotherapy and general psychiatry and psychology.  The courses are intended to complement the didactic and clinical training experiences of psychiatry residents and psychology and social work doctoral candidates.  The basic courses offer an introduction to core psychoanalytic concepts, utilizing the format of a lecture followed by small group discussion and presentation of relevant clincial examples.  The Advance Study groups give those trainees with more experience in psychotherapy an opportunity to study selected topics in more depth.




Basic Course

The Psychoanalytic Principles of Psychotherapy
Michelle Press, M.D., Lisa Korman, M.D. & Christian Maetzener, M.D.
Psychoanalysis provides a basic conceptual structure by which to understand the psychotherapeutic process.  Certain psychoanalytic concepts will be presented, discussed and elaborated to demonstrate theri relevance for data-gathering and clinical intervention in psychotherapy.

The Mind in Conflict
Mervyn Peskin, M.D. & Ian Buckingham, M.D.

A contemporary focus on the functioning of the mind from the perspective of modern conflict theory with emphasis on Brenner's revisions of tradition structural theory and a new appreciation of the significance of "the innate" in the design and functioning of the mind.

Psychoanalytic Principles of Child Development
Anna Balas, M.D., & David Sawyer, M.D.
The course will present an overview of current psychoanalytic perspectives on child development.  The interaction of constitutional factors and environmental influences on the formation of unconscious fantasy and intrapsychic conflict during the sequential stages of development will be emphasized. Clinical example will be offered to illustrate the concepts being presented.
