        Loyalists wanted to remain under the rule of the King of England. They had many different reasons for their loyalty. Other names for Loyalists were "Royalists", "The King's Friends" and "Tories".

      Patriots wanted to break away from England and be free to rule themselves. Other names for Patriots were "Rebels", "Sons of Liberty", "Colonials" and "Whigs".
