Daniel's Opinion of the Stamp Act
Daniel is a brazier, a craftsman who works with brass.
"I realize that there is a need to pay taxes and have paid my share willingly
when levied to control commerce and benefit our local interests. But this new
Stamp Act is unacceptable! King George forces this tax upon us and expects us
to use these confounded stamps in our everyday trade. First of all, they are
a nuisance, being required on all newspapers, legal documents and even decks
of playing cards. For what? To raise money for a war for which we already paid
our fair share and then some! Personally, my craft depends on brass shipped
from England, but if I need to change my trade I will, in order to support the
cause I believe in.
I agree with Patriots like Patrick
Henry who so eloquently and emphatically stated that we must not tolerate
"taxation without representation". Our wise diplomat Benjamin
Franklin tried valiantly to make the British Parliament understand the effect
of this detested legislation. They did not heed his warning. By the time we
are through with our protests, the Crown will have no other recourse than to
repeal this offensive Act."
