Edward's Opinion of the Intolerable / Coercive Acts
Edward is a Doctor of Medicine in Boston.
"I am a healer and a peaceful man, but I believe that the Crown is wrong to
take away our precious freedoms. These Intolerable Acts have closed our seaport,
the heart of our economy. Still we will continue to boycott goods from England
and demonstrate against such unfair measures. Thank goodness that Patriots in
other colonies support us by bringing us needed supplies by land.
The Redcoats have been more abusive than ever, knowing that we cannot bring
them to trial here. To me, the worst of these Acts forbids us to meet publicly
without the approval of the Royal Governor. We can no longer choose our local
leaders - a chartered
right we had enjoyed for over 100 years.
To their credit, some members of Parliament, like Edmund
Burke, were eloquent as they tried to convince other lawmakers to oppose
these forceful acts. But King George and Lord North were too strong. Our Patriot
leaders will meet soon in Philadelphia. If King George thinks he will break
our spirit, he is wrong! He can try to oppress us, but he will never restrain
the power of Liberty."
