Jonathan's Opinion of the Boston Tea Party
Jonathan is a merchant who trades goods by ship between England
and the American Colonies.
"I don't understand why Americans wouldn't want to buy the English tea. Even
with the tax, it is cheaper than the smuggled tea from Holland. It's a good
plan to help the East India Tea Company from going bankrupt. The East India
Company has kindly granted me permission to sell their tea. My business would
fall apart if I could not trade goods from Britain to the colonies. We are loyal
subjects to Britain - the King knows what is best for all his people. Governor
Hutchinson is right in insisting that the law be upheld.
Now these terrorists dressed in disguise have recklessly
destroyed thousands of pounds of tea. For what? These colonists are
not poor. They certainly can afford a few pennies to help the mother
country. We need to keep our tempers and talk out our disagreements.
It's the only peaceable solution!"
