The writs of assistance were passed in 1761 and were actually what we call today, search warrants. The British government wanted to know who was smuggling goods like sugar and molasses that the British were attempting to tax Americans on. With so many excellent harbors along the Atlantic coast, many Americans decided to smuggle the goods they wanted over paying a tax on them. The writs of assistance allowed British soldiers to search our homes for smuggled goods.
