"When I've been a guest speaker at various universities, some students invariably ask me who I consider to be the best contemporary author. I always hedge my reply and name five or six and Claire Burch is always on this short list. No one thoroughly familiar with Claire Burch's work would disagree. I recall "starvation days" in New York City after the end of World War II when Claire and James Baldwin and I struggled with early efforts. I remember Jimmy and I agreeing that of the three of us Claire had the only claim to genius. I have been aware during the intervening years of her extraordinary work, both in prose and in the visual arts dealing with the plight of the homeless and dispossessed and unfortunate. She has always had a unique sympathy for them, never allowing this to be side-tracked by the tragedies in her own life. If anything, these have given her deeper insights and understandings which, coupled with her artistic gifts, have led to a body of rare accomplishments. I consider it somewhat of a national disgrace that her work has not received the attention and acclaim it deserves.
I have now read her proposal for "Runaways: Two Thousand" for the first time. It
speaks for itself. It is a work that will indirectly benefit the tens of thousands now hovering
on the fringe of life. It will reveal the social force that reduce far too many human beings to
a slightly superior form of vermin. It is a work that demands to be undertaken and Claire
Burch has proved her ability to undertake it. I believe she should receive all the assistance
possible in carrying out a mission which can best be described as noble. It should be
remembered that true nobility and genius don't often have the opportunity to walk
hand-in-hand."
"Jose Quintero, looking fit and relaxed and, as usual, very Latin, is returning to the theatrical cauldron following a year's stay in Mexico. He's about to explore the work of a new playwright, Claire Burch, called "Ten Cents a Dance", which should not be thought of as having any relationship to the song that surfaced during the Thirties. Nor is it a musical, adds Quintero, puffing away on a cigarette, one in the chain. It is instead a work which, although not naturalistic in form, is not expressionistic either. "It is closer," Quintero goes on, "to something such as 'The Glass Menagerie.' It's a play about essences."
Plainly speaking, it's about the relationship between a mother and her daughter, and
Quintero, pinned to suggesting the play's theme, says its idea is that "any human being,
within the framework of his virtues and limitations, has a right to a life." Off Broadway,
where the director has scored some of his major successes, will get "Ten Cents a Dance"

Guilty Until Proven Not Guilty -- Napoleon's RevengeThe Nightmare Ordeal of Steve Weissner Color / sound / 58 minutes / ISBN 0-916147-81-9 This video tells the incredible story of a hippie dropout from Brooklyn, New York who, after years in the Far East and Southeast Asia, lands in the oldest prison in France, serving five years for a drug related "murder without intent." The World Bank lists Nepal as one of the poorest countries in the world, with a per-capita income of $160. Out of a population of over 19 million Nepalese, 90 percent are subsistence farmers scraping out a living in remote mountain villages. An increase in tourism, coupled with population growth and an inequality of resources, has had a negative impact on Nepal's fragile ecosystem. Threatened by environmental disaster, today, the Himalayan kingdom is no longer the "Shangri-La" touted in the tourist guidebooks. As the need for answers to the ecocrisis in the Indian subcontinent increase, the Nepalese people work to reverse the environmental destruction of their land. Environmental experts find that only a holistic approach toward development will lead to sustainable growth accompanied by environmental protection. With poverty alleviation playing a critical role in the development process, plans to protect Nepal's natural resources must address local communities' basic needs. By highlighting environmental projects in the field, Nepal at Risk identifies several successful strategies in nature conservation.
