The Flanagan Story:
Michael Flanagan was our first Flanagan ancestor to emigrate to
the United States from Ireland around the time of the Civil War. It appears that
he came to the U.S. alone. He married Mary Conroy, another Irish immigrant,
and settled in Brooklyn NY where he worked as a flagman for the railroad.
Michael and Mary had three children, Jeremiah, Thomas, and John. Of the three,
Jeremiah was the only one who married. In 1886, he and his new bride, Mary
Leonard, settled down in Brooklyn where Jeremiah worked as the Yard Master
at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. Jeremiah feared that his Flanagan branch would become
extinct so together they had 12 children, Jeremiah M., Thomas, Daniel,
Sylvester, Ella, Elizabeth, John, Edward, Joseph, Genevieve, Lawrence, & Bill. They in turn had their own families and the clan has never
ceased expanding.
