Cabooses

Cabooses are not just rolling stock. Since cabooses have a special place in everyone's heart they deserve their own page. At the moment, I have only one caboose, so here it is.

"A" End

The caboose is 8 studs wide and 36 studs long, and it is made of approximately 440 bricks The design is based on a Conrail N-20 caboose. (You can see pictures of the real thing at the Conrail Cyclopedia web site.) I have taken some liberties with the placement of the windows and with the placement of the stove pipe.

"B" End
The best thing about building trains eight studs wide is that you can build detailed interiors! Those two extra studs really help, and I have to say that building this interior was SO much fun! The offsetting of the cupola is done using 1x2 center stud plates. The easiest way to see how the cupola is attached is to look at the direction (sorry, the directions were removed to save space on the server). If you would like to have a copy of the directions for yourself, here they are (caboose.zip). The directions were made using MLCad. Michael, the author of MLCad, and all the people that have worked so hard to create a wonderful modeling system deserve a big thank you. If you are a Macintosh user (like me) there are some drawing programs in development. Check http://www.ldraw.org/article/97 for information
