SD40-2

This General Motors EMD SD40-2 is eight studs wide and fifty-nine studs long. The engine weighs 1.00 kg (2.20 lbs) The cab and platform are eight studs wide, but the nose and body are five studs wide. The five stud wide nose against an eight stud wide cab looks better than a six stud wide nose did against the eight wide cab, or at least I thought so.

Here is another front 3/4 view from a slightly higher angle. In this view, all of the fans, which are motorized, are clearly visible.

The fans are linked by rubber bands and gears to a technic axle that runs the length of the engine. The power for the fans is provided by a technic motor that is hidden in the cab of the engine. The cab is, of course, removable.

More construction details:

Since this is an SD engine a 6-wheeled truck is required. The motors were positioned so that they would be directly under the bulk of the engine to provide more traction. Unfortunately, this means that the last wheelset can lift off the track when reversing and pushing a long train.

There are vents on both sides of the blower housing. In fact, this models progenitor was inspired when I purchased a set that contained two 2x3 quarter round bricks (ldraw part number 6214).

This engine is also lighted. There are two LEGO 9v lights, one for lighting the cab, and another for lighting the headlight above the cab.

Here is a zipped up dat, a very old, out of date dat, of the engine. The file, sd40-2.zip, was made using MLCad and modified using Mac Brick CAD and LDGLite for OS X.
