This engine is a heavily modified version of LEGO's Super Chief engine. The modifications include a new windshield, new round widows, new rear doors, a lighted cab, functioning headlights, working fans, custom power truck decorations, and extensive undercarriage modifications. Oh yeah, it is 8 studs wide and 41 studs long, which counts as a substantial modification since LEGO's model is 6 studs wide and 31 studs long. Here is a view of the engine from above.

The round windows and the windshield are new twists on two old classics (then again, someone has probably already done this:). The studs on the inverted 1x4 arches are hidden in two 1x2x1 panels instead of hiding the studs with two 1x4 tiles (see the construction details to the right and left). The windshield is a combination of two previously used techniques. Two 3x4x1.3 windshields were mounted at an angle similar to the way 1x4x1.3 (jeep) windshields have been in the past.

All of the lights are a LEGO lights, but to get the lights in the headlights to light up the refectors, I put two 1x1 clear round plates in each reflector. The 1x1 rond plates help to catch the light and fill the reflectors.

fans

These new fans are geared together. The crown gears are close enough to each other that the gears engage, and one fan drives the next one. I also discovered that the older style crown gears work better in this situation than the newer style crown gears. The fifth fan (or first depending on how you conut them) is driven by a rubberband that connects it to the rack of fans. The fans are driven by a techic motor hidden in the cab and since the axle that drives the fans only rests in its holder the roof is removable. Now that there is a B-unit for this engine, the power for the fans and lights comes from a battery box in the B-Unit. I knew that two train motors, two technic motors, and three lights would shut down the LEGO speed regulator in short order.
