The LA Uprising in 1992 has given a wake-up call to Korean Americans. Now is the time for us to look seriously into ourselves and to acknowledge the conflicts and problems within and without. Recent survey reports that there are high resentments and anger toward Asian Americans. Anti-Asian violences are reaching record high. However, the people for change are nowhere in sight. Instead, the utter destructive nihilism among young and old Korean Americans is quickly spreading.
No matter how grim the facts are, we cannot give up the hope and must work with a full momentum to resolve the current problems of Korean Americans. We the people of the CKAC are trying our best to create such a momentum. It is an existential mode and the affirmation to say ‘we are Korean Americans.’ We must collectively create the culture, the history, and the community of which we can call our own. We actively seeking leadership and a new role in this land as ‘Americans.’
The heritage (Root) of a person is very important, especially, in a society where ‘white’ and ‘European’ values are only to be desired and promoted. By learning and acquiring our own Korean heritage(Root), Korean Americans become self-aware and self-determined. The CKAC reaches out to various places and institutions to introduce the positive aspect of Korean traditional culture and how one can develop Korean American identity from the firm root of Korean culture and history.
The CKAC is a cultural organization actively promoting community empowerment and Equality and Racial Harmony among Americans. Established in 1990 with a performance titled “To Live On This Land,” we proclaimed that we are the active participants in shaping better future of this country. We are no longer strangers or immigrants. We are future leaders and citizens of this land and we must take up our responsibility as such. For more detail history of CKAC click here
