Larry Whitney, Captain of the La Honda Fire Brigade...he posts this and possibly it's duplicated to you. At any rate, here it is. -----Original Message----- From: Larry Whitney [mailto:Lwhitney@flash.net] Sent: Thursday, June 03, 2004 5:01 PM To: Redwood Tea Room; Southcoast@yahoogroups; LaHonda@yahoogroups.com Subject: La Honda Fire- Mile Post 9.85- High Way 84 Warning Over the last few days the La Honda Fire Dept. has been dispatched to an unprecedented number of Motorcycle Accidents all occurring at the exact same location. Since Thursday of last week we have been dispatched three times to Mile Post 9.85 for "Motorcycle Over The Side" calls. This location is immediately east of the recently completed road work where the hill gave way during the 1998 El Nino Storm. On Monday of this week between 12 noon and 2 pm there was a total of five riders, all from outside this area, and four motorcycles that ran off the road at this location. All of the riders were able to jump from their bikes before the cycles crashed over the side. Three of the bikes landed one on top of another (see the attached picture if it comes with this transmission) forcing the injured riders who had already crashed to run to escape being hit. Fortunately most of the injuries received were minor, however the Motorcycles themselves were severally damaged if not totaled. There is evidence that there have been other accidents recently at this location that we have not been called to including a Toyota Bumper that was found between our Thursday and Saturday calls. This section of the Highway 84 has always been posed a danger to Motorcycle Riders. Prior to the El Nino Storm we had been dispatched to this location many times however never for this many accidents in such a short period of time. When approaching this area please do so with caution. If you know someone who rides a Motorcycle in this area please advise of the danger. The Highway Patrol is in communications with Caltrans to determine if additional signage might be required. Larry Whitney Chief La Honda Vol.Fire Dept. 650-747-9447 x 103
