October: Cassiopeia

Cassiopeia, was the queen of ancient Ethiopeia, wife of Cepheus, and mother of Andromeda. According to mythology she was banished to the sky for boasting of her own beauty.

This is one of the easiest constellations to find. In northern latitudes, such as North America, Canada and Europe and N. China and Japan, it is visible every clear night of the year, and its shape is unmistakable -- a large W. It lies across the Pole Star from the Big Dipper, and in summer eveniings it lies in the N-E part of the sky.

The central star, Gamma Cassiopeia, is irregularly variable. Usually it is third-brightest but once in a great while it becomes the brightest.

Cassiopeia contains several clusters that make fine sights in a telescope.
