I was born January 31, 1929, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and...

• studied physics at MIT (AB,1951) and astronomy and astrophysics at Harvard (PhD, 1956).
• spent most of my career studying the atmospheres of stars and the behavior of variable stars, especially those that pulsate;
• have also written on
  • history of astronomy,
  • astronomy in the art of Vincent van Gogh,
  • celestial navigation,
  • science education
  • autobiography.
  I am currently working on a book on education.
