There is really nothing more to say than, "Astounding!" Being a dark movie,
in both color and plot, the black levels were really important, and New Line
did very well. This DVD can really be a replacement for Video Essentials in
a way because the red levels just seem to jump on the screen. It was after
watching this movie that I realized that my red levels were off. After the
movie I popped in my Video Essentials and tested it out...it happens that my
TV did change! As soon as the reds were calibrated, the movie looked great.
If your reds are off even slightly, you're going to be annoyed.
Audio was great! It was loud, bassey, just a wonderful mix (audibly). As far
as a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, um... Well, one of the biggest expectations
of this movie was definitely the dance scene in the beginning. I don't remember
what it was like in the theater, but I was expecting a whole lot. I got a whole
lot, the only thing missing was directional sound. I guess I'm just a freak for
that. Because the whole 5.1 channel thing is in existence, I guess I just want
more from every DVD, as far as audio. Something that truly makes me feel like
I'm in the atmosphere. Don't get me wrong! Blade's directional sound was
great in some scenes, but just not in the most important one. Either way, it
still gets 5 for audio. The bass was tremendous! The whole dance scene shook my
room. Every little gunshot and punch registered on the richter scale. Great audio.
Reference quality if you want to show off your speaker's build quality. Ok if you
want to show off your Dolby Digital 5.1 setup.
This DVD is a New Line Platinum Series DVD. I should end this section right there.
New Line has probably the best reputation as far as DVDs go. In their Platinum Series,
which almost all of the good movies are in, they pack so much information that they
really use up that DVD! Not only are their transfers amazing, but they pack so many
extras, and to top that off, they make their menus so neat-looking. This DVD has
commentaries, a trailer, an alternate ending, character bios, and so much more!
