The video quality on the DVD was very vivid and colorful. It was very smooth on the 2.35:1 transfer. It's brightness/darkness was excellent. Another very important aspect was the fact that it was very crisp, and clear. You can spot the detail up front right next to the screen! When you have a nicely calibrated display, in my case, it was a direct view television screen, everything seems so realistic. As you would expect to find in every Lethal Weapon movie is some type of explosion. LW4 had such a real detailed looking explosion thanks to the smooth 2.35:1 transfer and the gifts of DVD video. I didn't even have it hooked up to an S-Video or component video. It was simply, a normal Moster Cable Video 2 video cable (RCA), and even then, the clarity was very noticable. There was almost no grain whatsoever! A reference quality DVD.
The audio was excellent. When you have a movie with explosions, gunshots, fighting, you would have to expect a lot. And, as I'm happy to say, this DVD conquered most of it. I mean like 98% of it. If you've read my other reviews, this is the movie that is stereotypically a PGS (Potentially Great Surround). I'm a sucker for underwater shots. Mainly because of the audio. Sound is different underwater, I'm sure you've all been in a pool at once. When you're outside, you hear air, and sounds from a far distance, birds high above you, but when you're underwater, everything seems a little closer. Bubbles flow right past you. Sound travels different. When quickly changing scenery from spacious outside to the claustrophobic inside (the water), it's the most realistic sound. This is because sound is just all around you, and it's very local. There's an underwater scene "somewhere" in the movie, I won't spoil it, but it wasn't that great. It didn't feel local. It was somewhere between the spacious sound of a completely quiet day, and being hit by water up front. Most of the bubble sound and such came from the front 3 speakers. The rear channels hardly picked up anything. That's besides the point. The other thing that contributed to most of the 5 1/2 stars were the explosions and such. The LFE had a field day with this. You see, at the time I'm writing this, I don't have a subwoofer, well a good one atleast, but I'm ordering soon, so when it comes in, this'll be one of the first movies I watch. Other than the small PGS parts, the audio in LW4 was a great one to hear.
This DVD definitely deserves its five stars. Techincally, this is the only special edition, currently, in the Lethal Weapon series. It was packed. One side had extras and the other was the 2.35:1 movie. Because it is the first special edition, it compensates for the lack of "extra stuff" in the other Lethal Weapon DVDs. It has deleted scenes from LW 1 - 3. It has all kinds of neat stuff. My favorite was watching the B-Roll footage from LW4. It's like filming of them filming. So, you kind of see exactly how each person is. It's not really outtakes, but more like just watching them act, and what goes on during the process. Great stuff, really deserves a 5!
