Mortal Kombat had almost crystal clear video. In the mostly dark movie, the blacks definitely held up well. I also own the VHS video, in which I purchased about a year ago, and when I popped this movie in, I was stunned by the improvement. Especially in a movie like Mortal Kombat, where there are just oodles of special effects and a lot of fire (Scorpion vs. Jonny Cage). When you have bright and vibrant colors like an orange or yellow, you can find little "artificats" really easily. In the VHS, there was not too much, but noticible fuzz in those scenes that had vibrant colors, again like that Scorpion vs. Johnny Cage, but in the DVD, there was no fuzz nor any artifacts or any other blemishes or flaws that I could tell.

Audio Quality

This part of the DVD disappointed me... REALLY disappointed me. Because this was my first DVD, and my first home experience with Dolby Digital, I was expecting nothing but the best. Because I remember when I had the Pro Logic set up, the sound was great, just lacked that Dolby Digital surround splitting function that I read so much about. I mean, yes, I did hear Dolby Digital in stores, of course, but not at home, so it was my first experience. Again, what a disappointment! At first it was great, I saw the trailer and then I saw the beginning intro with the fire and the Mortal Kombat logo, with the music playing, I was hyped up! Then the movie started. Shang Tsung started talking to Liu Kang's brother, and I thought, WOW! Dolby Digital really helps the center channel, I've never heard it this loud. Then after about 30 minutes into the movie, I had to face the facts. During the 30 minutes, I was just trying to make sure it wasn't the DVD. I tried clearing my ears, checking speaker connections, checking DVD to Receiver connections, and finally, I just had to face the facts, that the audio on Mortal Kombat, was really... crap. The sound effects were great, seeing that everything was coming out of the center speaker. The right and left speakers had very faint music. It was the music that was not projected anywhere. That's what gives Mortal Kombat its kick, but it got boring after a while. Eventually, I changed my receiver to lower the center channel and amplify the left/right to their max. Then, I listened to Mortal Kombat as it should be, but it was always uncomforting knowing that I had to really fiddle with my settings to get decent quality from a DVD. When I heard the next one, I couldn't hear anything out of the center, and the right/left were SO LOUD!

So, all in all, Mortal Kombat had a terrible sound transfer.

Mortal Kombat's menu was really nice-looking with that Mortal Kombat logo with the dragon. Layout was the first thing that I liked. Secondly, because chronologically this is the first thing you see, and then it was the EXTRAS! I love the idea that they include trailers, because it can really get me anxious to watch the movie. I think all DVDs should include their trailers. It also had a little "Kombatants" button which tells you the story of each fighter, which was also handy.
