Jack Wilkins is one of the most active and exciting jazz guitarists in New-York today.
Jack Wilkins has recorded many great albums under his own name, but my personal favorite is a double-album (half of which was recently reissued on CD) with Bob Brookmeyer called The Bob Brookmeyer Small Band (you can order this CD from Jazz Heritage records online. Jack's playing on that album is too amazing for words. His solos are deeply rooted in jazz guitar tradition, but his melodic and harmonic ideas are very modern and advanced.
Another one of Jack's most important records is You Can't Live Without It (Chiaroscuro records) where he is joined by Michael and Randy Brecker. Michael Brecker's solos on that album are some of the best he has ever recorded, and there was even a book of transcriptions of those solos, which seems to have disappeared off the market.
