During the 2008-2009 academic year, the Student Health Services is piloting a LGBT Health Program which will focus on addressing the special health care concerns of The George Washington University’s LGBT community. The program, run by a physician member of the LGBT community, will provide a variety of health care services for LGBT students requesting:
* General medical care from a member of the LGBT community (or from a LGBT-positive clinician).
* Immunizations against diseases particularly prevalent in the LGBT population.
-
*Sexually transmitted disease counseling and testing by clinicians familiar with the concerns of LGBT individuals.
-
*Screening for HIV, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Herpes, and visual screening for HPV.
* Screenings and referral for mental health issues (related to coming-out, depression, anxiety, relationship issues) affecting members of the LGBT community.
In addition to the clinical components, the LGBT health program will also include various components to serve the health needs of the greater LGBT community at GW. These components will include student education, group consultation, and outreach.
