Jacob was a pioneer settler of Madison Co., AL. The following article, which appeared in the "Huntsville (AL) Advocate", on June 16, 1877, explains this:

"History continued - The first settlement made where New Market now stands was that of two brothers, George and Jacob Broiles. They came to this country in 1806 and selected that spot for their home. First employed themselves in deadening timber and clearing land and in the course of a year or two had a pretty little farm. Settlers came in rapidly and other industries than farming were demanded. George Broiles built the first blacksmith shop in that part of what is now Madison Co. In 1808 the first tan yard in the county or state was begun by one Trump in the vicinity of Broiles' Farm..." [19]59

The record on Jacob's children is proven by his will, which mentions them all.

1788 - His father moves the family to Tennessee from Randolph Co., NC. [1]

1806 - He moves to Madison Co., AL. Note that his twin brother Isaac moved to Lincoln Co., TN.

1809 - Jacob Broils is found in the census of Madison Co., AL. He has two sons and one daughter in addition to himself and his wife. [19]80

1810...1813 - Taxed for 1 poll in Madison Co., AL. [3]4:20

1 Jul 1811 - James Burleson, assignee of James Cunningham, vs. William Willbourn, regarding a note dated 9 Jul 1810. Jacob Broyles is named to the Jury. Madison Co., AL. [19]80

13 Feb 1812 - Jacob Broyles buys 230.51 acres on Warrant/Cert. 585. [106]

8 Feb 1814 - Jacob and George Broyles and others are named appraisers of the estate of Green H. Trump. [105] Perhaps this is the Trump referred to above.

- Jacob appears in Madison Co., AL, deeds. [1]

1834 - James Sisco dies without a will, and Jacob Broyles is named as an appraiser of the estate. [119]6:92

1840 - There is a listing under his name in the census of Madison Co., AL, however, there is no man of the right age in the listing, simply a woman aged 50-60 years, and a young boy. Jacob's son John is living nearby and has a man aged 50-60 living with him. This may be Jacob.

7 May 1842 - Jacob makes his will in Madison Co. In it he mentions his wife Mary and children George, John, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Delia, Washington, and Isaac M. [1]

21 May 1842 - The following obituary appeared in the "Huntsville Democrat" - "Died at his residence in this county on Saturday the 14th instant after a protracted illness Jacob Broyles aged 61 years. He resided in the county upwards of 30 years, greatly respected by all who knew him. The Jonesborough Tennessee Sentinel will please copy the above." [19]15 This last part refers to the practice of that time where newspapers would copy articles from other newspapers so that news could be passed around regarding stray animals, deaths, land claims, and so on. In this case, the Alabama newspaper knew that Jacob had relations in east Tennessee, and thus requested that the notice be run there.

13 Jun 1842 - Jacob Broyles is deceased. A citation is issued to George Broyles, Benjamin Broyles, Washington Broyles, John C. Broyles, John Broyles, and Eldridge Bailes. Madison Co., AL. [118]8:467

11 Jul 1842 - Jacob Broiles' will is probated in Madison Co., AL. Mary and son Isaac M. are named executors. wit: Charlton A. Mewborn, Bradford Hambrick, J.J. Power. [19]60:84

1850 - Mary Broyles, aged 65, from N.C., is living in Madison Co., AL, with E. and Delilah Bales. [5] This is her daughter Delilah and husband Eldridge Bailes.
