John made the move to Tennessee when he was young boy. He grew up to become a successful farmer on Horse Creek in Greene Co. Of note, seven of his eleven children married Broyles cousins!

There is very little evidence of a Bays family in Washington or Greene Cos. It is possible that the name has been confused with Bailey, Bayles, and Hays in the printed records of the area.

1783 - The first Baptist Church was organized in Washington Co., TN. It was the Cherokee Creek Church, by Tidence Lane. John Broyles was among its first members. [131]:891 (See comment in next item.)

Oct 1786 - At Cherokee meeting house on the 4th Saturday of October, 1786, was organized the Holston Baptist Association, at which time 6 churches were represented as follows: Cherokee Creek - John Broyles, James Keel, John Layman, William Murphy. [131] It seems improbable that he would do this at the age of 13, but there are no other known John Broyles at this time. Perhaps this record refers to a hitherto unknown John Broyles, perhaps they are simply errors of fact.

- John assisted in the erection of Stone Dam camp ground, and was one of the first tenters. [3]1:46

18 Sep 1795 - Joseph Sharp sells to John, land on the west side of Horse Creek. In John's will, this land goes to David. [1]

17 Feb 1799 - John Broyles is executor of Jiles Brooks, Washington Co., TN. Probated May 1799. [132]1 However, another source gives the name as John Bayles. [8]:7

22 Oct 1804 - John Broyle witnesses the probate of Lewis Broyles, Greene Co., TN. [10]:3

1805 - John Broiles is on the Greene Co., TN, tax list. [47]

25 Jan 1808 - In two deeds, John buys land from Matthias Broyles. In John's will, this land goes to David. The Matthias referred to is apparently Matthias Jr. The two deeds were for 110, and 14 acres. [3]4:25

1809...1815 - John is taxed for 274 acres on Horse Creek. [13]

19 Apr 1829 - His children George and Elizabeth drowned in the Nolachucky River on Easter Sunday. Jacob Broyles (husband of Elizabeth) was able to save their three children but not his wife or brother-in-law. [3]3:117

1830 - John Broyles, Sr., is taxed for 434½ acres on Horse Creek. [14]

26 Aug 1843 - John writes his will. wit: Geo. W. Foute & Jacob F. Broyles. Jacob F. & son-in-law John W. Wilhoite are named as executors. All children except son George (deceased) are mentioned. Sons David and Ozey are to care for John and his wife. [96] The will is a bit unusual in that all of his daughters are listed even though two had died prior to the date of the will. But the will goes on to refer to 'them and their children'. In this indirect way he makes a bequest to his grandchildren by them.
