The assignment of Jacob as a son of George is done on the following reasoning. He is undoubtedly a grandson of Conrad because of his age and location. This would make him a son of Michael, Frederick, Adam or George. Jacob was born after Michael died, so Michael is ruled out. Adam moved to Tennessee c. 1788, and would certainly have taken Jacob with him, so Adam is ruled out. Jacob was too young to be a son of Frederick, and Frederick's children are accounted for. This leaves George as his father.

Jacob's occupation was given in the 1850 census as 'hatter'.

A most remarkable thing about him is that he married three times without leaving a marriage record of any kind! Further, his third wife was forty years his junior. After Jacob's death, sometime around 1855, she and children moved to Missouri where she remarried. Several of the children later moved to Kansas.

22 May 1808 - Jacob purchases 70 acres from Philemon Plummer in Randolph Co., NC. [100]11:336 This is the earliest land record of Jacob, and would suggest that he had just married. Philemon Plummer is probably an uncle or grandfather to his wife Susanna.

14 Aug 1808 - Jacob makes two additional purchases, for 50 and 30 acres, from Philemon Plummer. [100]11:337

1810 - Jacob's census listing is rather unusual. He has two young sons, a young man aged 16 to 26 years, himself, and a woman older than 45 years. Perhaps this older woman is his wife who got misregistered.

1815 - Jacob is taxed for 150 acres on the Uharie River. One White poll. $300 valuation. Randolph Co., NC. [101] It doesn't look like he inherited any land from Frederick, which is another piece of evidence against him being Frederick's son.

1816 - Jacob receives two state grants, one for 50 acres, the other for 150 acres. [100]10:413

1817 - Jacob purchases 55 acres on the Uharie from William Wright. [100]13:265

18 Jan 1819 - Jacob Garren of Rowan Co., NC. (no wife) sells to Jacob Briles of Randolph Co., for $340, 103 acres, partly in Rowan Co., and partly in Randolph Co. on both sides of Rich-land prong of Uhary on NW of Jacob Rhodes' old deeded land from Esq. Henry Eustes McCulloh, crossing the county line and the creek, next to Col. Harper. wit: T. Copple, P. Copple. Proved by the latter in May 1819. [121]25:168

1820 - Unfortunately, the census record of Randolph Co. was destroyed in the War of 1812. 1820 - Jacob is taxed for two tracts of land, 510 acres valued at $1000, and 163 acres valued at $400. Both tracts are located on the Uharie river.

11 May 1823 - John Plummer, of Davidson Co., NC, writes his will in which he mentions wife Margaret, sons Zadoc, Isaac, Philemon, John, and daughters Susanna Broyles, Elizabeth Copple, Delila Copple, Huldah, and Mary. [120] Given that the children were probably given in age order, Susanna would be the eldest daughter, and possibly the eldest child. This seems to be the case since Zadoc was born in 1792 and Susanna seems to have been married in 1808. This would put her birthyear as c. 1790.

19 Apr 1836 - John Plummer's will is probated. Daughter Susan Broyles's children David, Alsey, Hannah, John, and Mary, are listed as heirs. [120]
