Generation 4, Keith #33

Jemima and her older sister Anne married brothers, Joseph and Hugh Brown. They all moved, along with their brothers, to Pendleton Dist., SC.

c. 1780 - Her father moves the family from Virginia to Tennessee.

May 1782 - She is named in her father's will, Washington Co., TN. As daughter Mima Broyles she inherits 60 pounds currency. Since she is not given as "Mima Brown", it appears she married latter paft of 1782.

- They move to Pendleton District, SC, near the Saluda River.

1797 - They are living in Franklin Co., GA.

17 Jan 1810 - In his will, Joseph Brown Sr. mentions Jemimah, the widow of his son Joseph Brown. The will was witnessed by Aaron Broyles. No probate date given. Pendleton Dist., SC. [38]:48

5 Mar 1845 - While a resident of Lumpkin Co., GA, Jemima applies for a pension on the basis of her first husband's service in the Revolutionary War.

14 Dec 1846 - Joseph Williams of Polk Co., TN, age 67 makes an affidavit that Joseph Brown was indeed a veteran of the Revolution. Williams married Brown's eldest daughter Elizabeth in Oct 1799. He further states that Jemima remarried to John Robertson after the death of Brown. After her second husband died c. 1826, she moved to Habersham Co., GA, where she lived until she moved to Lumpkin Co., GA, where she lived with her son Aaron. [123]14:889 - Another affidavit, this time from Violet Reed, 79 years old, of Hall Co., GA, states that Joseph Brown was a private in the Revolutionary War, being drafted and served his first tour in the year 1777 in his 17th year, deponent recollecting that the young men were put on the muster-rolls at age of 16 years and that said Joseph Brown (who she says was her brother) drafted the evening of the same day that he was entered on the muster-roll having just "turned" 16 years of age...he was in the battle at Brier Creek on Savannah River in Georgia as he informed her on his return home; that said soldier entered the war from Guilford Co., NC, where he and the remainder of his father's family resided eight miles from Guilford Court-house. She says they removed from Guilford Co., NC, and settled in what is now the State of Tennessee on the Chucky River, after which said Joseph served two or three more tours of duty, being in the battle at Kings Mountain in 1780 (as she was so informed by him on his return), serving a part of his time in said tours under Capt. Moore in Col. Sevier's regiment. That said Joseph was married in 1782, and about the close of the war removed to Pendleton Dist., SC, and settled within two miles of Saluda River where he lived some eight or ten years, thence moving and settling on the Tugalo River in then Franklin Co., GA, where he died in 1799, leaving the applicant Jemima as his widow; that said Jemima afterwards married a man named Robertson who died about 1825-26, leaving Jemima a widow the second time, and that the said Jemima has since remained a widow, now residing in Lumpkin Co., GA. [123]14:889

20 Mar 1855 - Mrs. Jemima Robertson, age 90 years, made her declaration in Lumpkin Co., GA, to obtain bounty land as the widow of a Revolutionary War soldier, and deposed that she was a resident of said county and is the widow of John Robertson who died in Pickens Dist., SC, about 1824, and that she was formerly the widow of Joseph Brown who was a private in the Rev. War and that he "was of N.C." and that she is now a pensioner under the Act of Congress of Feb. 2, 1848 drawing $60 per annum by virtue of the services of said Joseph Brown; ... that she was Jemima Broyles before marriage.
