Aaron Broyles and his descendants have been very successful. He was a pioneer settler of present day Anderson County, SC, and died a very wealthy man. His children also did well for themselves, marrying into respected families, and becoming lawyers and doctors. According to [1], Aaron owned 7000 acres at his death. He was also known as Major Broyles, which was probably a title of respect. The following excerpts give an idea of what life was like for Aaron and his descendants.

"Another of the builder families of Anderson is that of Broyles. The pioneer in this section was Aaron, who settled somewhere not far from the old Calhoun section, and married Fannie Reed, daughter of another early settler. They began life with love, courage and industry their only assets. Their first home was a log cabin with a dirt floor. Mr. Broyles was of German descent, and Mrs. Broyles of French Huguenot blood. While their children where still small, they had begun to accumulate a good share of worldly goods, and they gave their boys and girls what educational advantages the section offered. Their sons were John T., born in 1806; Oze, Cain and Abel. The youngest died when a boy. Cain and Oze lost their lives during the War Between the States. (This last seems incorrect. [6]) "The eldest, John T., had quite a number of adventures. In 1817 he accompanied a relative to Fort Hawkins, which stood where the city of Macon, GA, is now located. They drove cattle which the owner sold to the government for the soldiers stationed there. When a little older he accompanied his father to Hamburg, SC, then a flourishing trade center. Mr. Broyles raised a quantity of tobacco, which was the staple crop of this section in the early times. Young John rode one of the animals which drew the hogshead and his father rode the other, their camping outfit packed between them as best they could." [36]:148

"About 14 miles from the city of Anderson in the neighborhood of old Calhoun, occurred in the early days a brutal Indian massacre of a white family.... the Indians, instigated by a notorious Tory of the locality, whose name was Vaughn, surprised the family and killed all of them except one small negro boy who escaped in the dark and climbed a tree in the adjacent swamp, clasping to his breast a pet dog.... The story of the boy has been handed down, and it was said that the Indians, knowing how many were in the family, missed the lad and spent several hours looking for him. The poor little fellow told when next day he reached Long Cane that sometimes the savages stopped under the very tree he had climbed, and that his little dog would bristle up as though he intended to growl, but never did, just cowered in the boy's arms in silence. "Mr. O.E. Horton, of Atlanta, tells the story as he heard it from his grandfather, Major Aaron Broyles, who knew the people, and lived as near them as any one did. He calls the people Kemp,... says there were five in the family, and that the story of the little negro and his dog is true. The house was burned, the bodies mutilated and left lying where they fell. The sorrowing neighbors took them up and buried them just back of where the house stood. There a neighborhood graveyard afterwards grew up." [36]:6-8

He owns 22 slaves. 1840 - In the census he is given as owning 33 slaves, and has 11 people engaged in Agriculture, and one person in Manufacture & Trade.

17 Sep 1841 - In the "Pendleton Messenger" - "Died on the night of the seventh inst., Mrs. Frances Broyles, consort of Maj. Aaron Broyles, of this District, aged near 72 years. She has left a husband and a long train of relatives and friends." [41]:67
