Little is known of John and his family. Tradition makes Hanley and Fielding his sons. The information below links Simeon to him. This is entirely supported by the tax lists in [51], where he is taxed for two polls starting in 1820, three in 1823, back to 1 in 1829, and again to two in 1833. Combined with the tax entries for Fielding and Simeon, and the fact that boys over 16 were taxed, we see that the birth years of John's sons were 1803, 1806, and 1816. This is in perfect concert with the facts regarding Fielding, Simeon, and Hanley.

As far as his daughters go, Eleanor is likely to be his since Fielding's marriage security was Eleanor's husband, and Fielding was security for her marriage.

c. 1801 - His father moves the family from Madison Co. to Monroe Co., VA. Today this is Monroe Co., WV.

1810...1837 - John is found on the tax lists of Monroe Co., VA. [51]

11 Oct 1823 - John and his brother Aaron are named executors of his father's will. They are two split two tracts of land totaling 200 acres. [93]

15 Aug 1836 - John Broyles is awarded a writ of ad quod damnum to determine damages to his property by a road to Grey Sulphur Springs. [134]:150

17 Oct 1836 - Orderd that damages to John Broyles be made good in the next county levy as well as chg-cash. [134]:172

1850 - The census entry for John and Elizabeth notes that John as 'blind'. He has no given occupation, but they are living next to son Simeon and family.

11 Dec 1865 - Lewis H. Broyles is granted letter of administration of the estate of John Broyles, Senr. Simeon Broyles is security. [133]:32 Lewis is the grandson of John.

12 Feb 1866 - The bill of sale of John's estate is presented. [133]:36
