Morris Goodstein did not know that his name was Goodstein until he migrated to the U.S. When he was a child, his parents were unable to take him to the U.S. with them and his siblings. He was left in Russia with a family, the "Udalls". He grew up by the name of Eugene Udall and never knew that the Udalls were not his natural parents. In fact, he married Ana as Eugene Udall, not Morris Goodstein.

Prior to WWI, he and Ana imigrated around c.1914 to the U.S. Ana went by way of Siberia and entered the U.S. through San Francisco. She worked all the way through many countries and learned approx. 7 or 8 languages. Morris went through Europe performing for money and committing petty crimes for a bed to sleep in and a meal (jail). He eventually ended up at Ellis Island.

In Ellis Island, Eugene was unable to locate his travelling documents. He was not allowed to leave Ellis Island until they knew who he was, where he was going to live, and with whom. They sent away for his birth certificate. It came with the name Morris Goodstein on it. His natural parents were living in New York City. His father came to meet him at Ellis Island. He them was reunited with his family.
