Homer
was known to be a blind poet. Homer was also thought to
live during the Dark Ages of Greece. Historians do not
know exactly when Homer lived but they think it could
have been anywhere from as early as 900 B.C. or as late
as 750 B.C. Everyone that has ever heard of Homer knows
him for his two great epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey.
When
Homer apparently lived, during the Dark Ages, writing
disappeared. Many of the Greeks relied on oral stories
to teach lessons and to preseve their history. Bards,
or in other words a wandering poet, told stories of
old heroes of the Mycenaean civilization and of Troy.
Bards would come and usually tell stories that would
last one night, or could last as long as a couple of
evenings. It was all entertainment though. According
to Greek custom, guests were fed and given a place to
stay. The bards would make their entertaining stories
last as long as they could so that they could stay in
one place as long as possible. According to many legends,
the greatest bard was the blind poet Homer.
