Science Fiction & Fantasy

Banks, Iain M.

Baxter, Stephen Brin, David Bujold, Lois McMaster Hamilton, Peter F. Moran, Daniel Keyes Piper, H. Beam Simmons, Dan Vance, Jack Weber, David Williams, Tad Doctor Who Novels worth reading.
Well, I've finally started reading these books on something like a regular schedule.  Being the odd-sort that I am, I have elected to read the books more or less in chronological order, which means the Missing Adventures and Past Doctors Adventures (starting with the first Doctor onwards) to be followed by the New Adventures (when I hit the seventh Doctor), then to be followed by the Eighth Doctor novels.  So far most of them have been pretty mediocre, although I have liked a few.  One of these days I should start posting reviews of them.

Here is a list of the novels I have read so far that are worth reading:

  1. 1st Doctor
  2. Venusian Lullaby, by Paul Leonard (Virgin MA)
  3. The Sorceror's Apprentice, by Christopher Bulis (Virgin MA)
  4. The Plotters, by Gareth Roberts (Virgin MA)
  5. The Witch Hunters, by Steve Lyons (BBC PDA)
  6. Salvation, by Steve Lyons (BBC PDA)
  7. 2nd Doctor
  8. Dreams of Empire, by Justin Richards (BBC PDA)
  9. 3rd Doctor
  10. The Face of the Enemy, by David McIntee (BBC PDA)
  11. The Wages of Sin, by David McIntee (BBC PDA)
  12. 4th Doctor
  13. System Shock, by Justin Richards (Virgin MA)
  14. Millenium Shock, by Justin Richards (BBC PDA)
  15. The Romance of Crime, by Gareth Roberts (Virgin MA)
  16. The English Way of Death, by Gareth Roberts (Virgin MA)
  17. The Well-Mannered War, by Gareth Roberts (Virgin MA)
And before people ask, no I have not yet read Cold Fusion, Goth Opera, or any of the other DW novels that contain characters central to series I write in.  It is my policy not to read these novels, as I do not want other writer's interpretations to shade my own.  Incidentally, the same generally also applies to fanfics.

Modern Literature

Clancy, Tom

  1. Jack Ryan series
  2. Patriot Games
  3. The Hunt for Red October
  4. The Cardinal of the Kremlin
  5. Clear and Present Danger
  6. The Sum of All Fears
  7. Debt of Honor
  8. Executive Orders
  9. The Bear and the Dragon
  1. Other
  2. Red Storm Rising
  3. Without Remorse
  4. Rainbow Six -- Only recommended if you like Tom Clancy's other works.  Otherwise, not really recommended.
Classic Literature
There is a reason why these books have stood the test of time, and its not because your English teacher has told you so. Anyone who seriously wants to write should take the time to read at least some of the classics.  After all, how can you know where you're going if you don't know where you've been?

  • Austen, Jane
  • Bronte, Charlotte
  • Chretien deTroyes
  • Conrad, Joseph
  • Dickens, Charles
  • Dostoevsky, Fyodor
  • Dumas, Alexander
  • Homer
  • Malory, Sir Thomas
  • Virgil
  • Scott, Sir Walter
