Read the Story of These Photos

In 1957 I was fortunate enough to go on a two week trip to Europe during leave while in the United States Army. We flew "Space Available" (no charge) on the Military Air Transport Service. There were no passenger jets then and we traveled in a four engine piston military transport plane (C-118). The flight from New Jersey to the UK was 21 hours in the air.

On the return trip everyone woke up in the morning to look out the windows and see that one of the propellers had stopped turning. The crew assured us that the plane was ok with three engines running.

I guess the air force was concerned because a little while later we noticed a seaplane flying next to us.

The photo on the left is the propeller that had stopped and was feathered. You can't see the propeller next to it because it was turning (fortunately). The picture on the right is the seaplane.

We skipped a stop in Washington, D.C. and flew directly to our final destination at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey.

The pictures were taken using Kodachrome Slide Film and are still in remarkably good condition after 50+ years.
