So, here it is, the final chapter of VERY JUST FINE. Believe it or not, I originally envisioned this as a Real Rock Record. For a variety of reasons, that approach wasn't satisfactory in the end. I ended up taking the inverse arrangement approach to NEW BIRD RISE by having the rockin'-est songs played in mono with 1 acoustic guitar and giving the ballads expansive, layered treatments. However, I also found myself returning to lessons learned in 1998 from making NEW BIRD RISE about performance practice, when to abandon a session and when to keep pressing on. (Oh, and I got to play bass again! Yay!) So, for those lessons among many others, this record owes a big debt to Eric Diez. What to say about the songs? They're shorter than usual (excepting the 1998 guitar-splonk relic "Valentine's Day") and more focused, even when they don't make linear sense. They speak of healing, celebration, getting up and walking on. They make me happy and hopeful.
