Class Expectations

My goal is to provide a positive learning experience for sixth grade students. To that end, I would like to be clear about my expectations of their responsibilities in science class.
All students are expected to:

  • Follow all school and classroom rules, policies, & procedures.
  • Use the agenda to record assignments every day.
  • Complete assignments neatly and on time
  • Do their own work. Academic dishonesty will result in a grade of "0" and may result in further disciplinary action.
  • Use courteous and respectful behavior at all times.
  • Always do their best.
  • Seek additional help as needed. Time is available before and after school.

Organization
Students must be prepared for class. Have all appropriate materials for science class. It is the responsibility of the student to copy all homework assignments into the agenda. Agendas will be used to communicate with the parent. It is helpful if the parent initials or signs that they have read the teacher's message. Agendas are purchased at school.

Homework

Homework is assigned on as-needed basis. It is typically one of three things:

  • Completion of class assignment
  • Review/ reinforcement of concepts covered in the classroom’
  • Studying for a test

Grades

Classroom work and homework will be graded Satisfactory , Needs improvement (N) and Unsatisfactory (U). A letter grade is given to quizzes, and tests and other forms of assessment. Assignments must be turned in on time. For the first two terms of sixth grade, students have the opportunity to bring up any weak grade to 70. All tests and weak work are shown to the parent and signed to verify it was seen. Work is corrected, signed, and returned to class the following day for a grade change.

About the Teacher

I am a sixth grade science teacher at McDevitt Middle School in Waltham, MA. Previous to this position, I worked as a Waltham elementary science specialist and health specialist for grades kindergarten through grades six. Additionally I had the privilege to co-teach a physics course, The Science in Science Teaching and Learning, as an adjunct lecturer at Brandeis University.

I enjoy spending time with my daughter and husband. Tennis and golf are my sports of choice. I enjoy reading, gardening, hiking with friends, and traveling when I get the chance.
