Procedures are the way we do things in science.

We have procedures so that our class runs smoothly and safely.

Start of Class Procedures

Why do we have Start of Class Procedures ?

To be able to start quickly so we have more time for labs and activities.

More class time means less homework.

  • Wait outside against the railing until invited in.
  • Come into the room and sit in your assigned seat.
  • Take a book out to read while you wait for instructions.
  • Have your homework ready for collection.
  • Have your agenda ready to write in new homework assignments.

End of Class Procedure

Why do we have end of class procedures?

To make sure all materials are safely put away so we will have them to use again,

To keep our classroom clean and safe.

  • Begin to clean up and put your materials away only after you have been given instructions to do so.
  • Put all supplies, materials and equipment back in the appropriate place.
  • When the bell rings, push in your chair and stand behind it. If it is the last class of the day, put the stools and chairs on top of the tables so that the floor may be swept.

The bell does not dismiss you. I will dismiss you

Handing in Papers Procedures

Why do we have a handing in papers procedure?

To make sure that all student work gets turned in so that it can be graded

To inform parents of missing work.

I will call for your assignment. If assignment is missing, you will write in your agenda “homework not done”. I will initial agendas. Parents need to also initial so I know it had been seen.

Handling Equipment

  • Pick up supplies after you have been given instructions to do so. Never pick up supplies until you have been instructed to do so.
  • Supplies already on your table at the start of class must be left alone until instructions are given for their use.

Lab Safety Procedures

Why do we have computer procedures?

To keep expensive equipment in good working order

  • Rules in the Safety Contract will be followed at all times.
  • The student will behave responsibly at all times
  • All instruction ( written and verbal) will be followed
  • Goggles will be worn anytime you are using heat or chemicals

Computer Use Procedures

Why do we have computer use procedures?

To keep expensive equipment in good working condition

  • Each student must have a signed Acceptable Use Agreement before Internet access will be allowed
  • No settings (screensaver desktop, cursor)0 may be changed on the computers.

Group Work Procedures

Why do we have group work procedures?

To make sure all instructions are heard and followed

To be respectful of our neighbors

To keep students safe during activities

Quiet talking is allowed during group work. If materials are needed, someone will be assigned to get the supplies. Only one person from each group is allowed out of their seats at a time.

Leaving the Classroom Procedures

Why do we have leaving the classroom procedures?

To prevent the disruption of learning’

To practice being organized

To go to the Nurse

I have band-aids if you need one. Wait until you are working independently before you ask for one

It is a non-emergency; please do not interrupt to ask to leave: ask before class or during independent time.

If you feel sick or faint, ask immediately. If you feel like you are going to be sick and do not have time to ask, go straight to the bathroom.

Take a corridor pass with you.

To go to the Bathroom

Write the time of departure in the logbook.

Do not interrupt instructions, class discussion or student questions to ask to leave the room.

Take a PASS with you.

Talking and Asking Question Procedures

Why do we have Talking and Asking Question Procedures?

To make sure everyone who wants to speak has the opportunity to do so

To be respectful of other

To be able to hear and learn from others

  • Whenever another person is speaking, you should be listening.
  • What does listening look like?
    • Stop what you are doing, no distractions.
    • Look at the speaker
    • Listen – your mouth is closed
  • Raise your hand to speak. Wait to be called upon.
  • Never interrupt someone while they are speaking
  • Quiet talking is allowed during group work. The other lab group should not be able to hear you.
  • If you have a question during a lab or activity, raise your hand and let me come to you. It is a safety issue to have students moving around the room. Be patient, there are a lot more of you than there is of me. Try to problem-solve the question in your group. The question should be a group question.

Sharpening pencils & Borrowing Supplies Procedure

Why have Sharpening pencils & Borrowing Supplies Procedure

To make sure everyone has supplies when they need them

To make sure learning is not disturbed by getting supplies

  • Be prepared with all of your supplies before coming to class
  • Never sharpen your pencil or ask to borrow something while someone is talking. This is very inconsiderate and bad manners.

Make-Up Work Procedures

Why we have Make-Up Work Procedures

So that students can easily find the work they missed while absent

Make up work is the responsibility of the student. You must ask for missing work. In general, you have one day for each day absent to compete the missing work.
