Marlena Shaw

World-Renowned Jazz Vocalist

"Left Hand Corner"

I want to make you feel

I want to see you smile

I want to hear you shout right out loud

I want to taste your salty tears

Your unwhispered fears

Your dreams you haven’t dreamed and

Frolic in your unstifled cheers.

Grow with you -- Through you --

And to be you

I am the sound of your music

I want to do something to you

So that you’ll hum when you think of me

Love me as I love you

I am the sound of your music

By the mid-1960s Shaw was performing regularly for audiences in the Catskills, Playboy clubs, and other New York area clubs. In 1966, she recorded "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" for the Chess Records subsidiary Cadet. The single's success, a rare vocal version of the tune, prompted the recording of two albums for the label, released in 1967 and 1969.

Shaw then performed as the featured vocalist with the Count Basie Orchestra for four years.

In 1972 Shaw became the first female vocalist signed to Blue Note Records, recording a number of acclaimed albums for the label, followed by tenures at Columbia, Verve, and Concord Jazz.

At her concerts and club shows, Shaw continues to dazzle audiences with her intoxicating blend of straight-ahead jazz, soul, pop, and classic R&B.
