The Last Visit
by DR Varg

Last Friday saw the date, which hints
misfortune will descend!
The 13th day of one year back,
though, marked an era's end!

December thirteenth '95
(on Wednesday that day fell),
I traveled off to your house,
thinking all was fine and well.

I purchased you some flowers;
I enjoyed the smile they brought.
Your beaming face was won'drous
and its glow, I ne'er forgot.

You made me feel so special, then,
whenever I'd arrive.
A hug and kiss awaited me.
'Twas good to be alive.

You thanked me for the flowers
with an extra warm embrace.
You gently took the floral gift
and set it in a vase.

I noticed, posted on the 'fridge,
a flyer, for a show:
The Lettermen in Concert.
Did you hope, perhaps we'd go?

'Twas at The Center For The Arts;
just opened and all new.
I should have bought those tickets, then.
Your hope's long overdue!

You said, "Give me your coat and hat
and go and have a seat.
The food is almost ready.
In a minute we will eat!"

The kids ate with us--but the fare
is somewhat of a blur.
Though, Amy had strawb'ry milk.
Of that, I'm very sure!

The food, I know, was plentiful.
You, afterwards, howe'er,
still asked me, "Have you had enough?"
Your eyes, expressing care.

The meal complete we cleared the table,
that's when I did muse,
"The paper, is it somewhere, here?
And could it, I peruse?"

You phoned upstairs to Mrs. Black.
"All through with it," said, she.
You went out on this winter night
to bring it back for me.

Not just the daily paper, did you
carry, then back in,
but also homebaked cookies, for me,
in a festive tin.

"You can't eat these, says Mrs. Black,
till Christmas Day is here!"
"But I told her, on your ride home,
they'd likely disappear."

We settled in the playroom
with our, now quenched, appetite.
You started school correcting
and a fire, I did light.

You seemed a trifle, bit subdued
but frankly, I confess,
I figured it was just because
of holiday caused, stress!

You said you'd had a headache
that was unremitting, hence
I offered to massage your neck,
to ease the muscles, tense.

You said, "You do not have to.";
as I rubbed your shoulder's skin.
"...My pleasure." I responded.
And my words were genuine!

I hoped, so, that a good massage,
your pain, 'twould help allay.
A good nights rest was needed too.
For, there was school, next day.

Our visit, we concluded, then,
so get to bed, you could.
Your headache, I hoped soon'd be gone.
And two days hence, it would.

You didn't watch me as I left,
this night, but I supposed
'twas just your need to get to bed;
that's why the shade was closed.

I ate my cookies as I drove
along a dark, Route 3.
They soon were gone
and as they say--
the rest is history.
