Rediscovering Gratefulness
by DR Varg

bricks (2.75K)bricks (2.75K)
I can't forget how numb I was
through most of 1996.
'Twas like I spent each waking hour
encircled by a wall of bricks!

bricks (2.75K)bricks (2.75K)
And nothing Lo! could penetrate;
my state of grief was all I knew!
No empathy could e'er be sensed;
'twas buried deep, way out of view!

...was Oh! so weak and helpless then
and nothing, NOTHING made a dent
through all the clouds which circled me;
I lived each day in such torment!

But slowly, I've trudged forward with
each step, the thing to focus on.
And now my gait is pretty wide;
improving, more each waking dawn!

And what a blessing! I'm aware
I've trekked so long through this ordeal;
So...can't ignore from whence I came;
And I am here! And I can feel!

This state, was just, for so long, lost;
I tried to find it--no success!
...was told how others had it worse
but couldn't feel the thankfulness!

But now it's back; it's found again;
so blessed am I, it's once more, near.
I sometimes need to grope for it
but it is close, I needn't fear!

And when I touch it, light appears!
...feels like a sunrise in my soul!

sunsise (8.55K)
my mood is lifted; pleasure strikes!
I feel so good; fulfilled and whole!

And all those poems, did counsel me;
...was no quick fix, but I was blessed!
And slowly, due the processing,
I struggled forward; did my best!

Just rushing forth can cause more hurt;
denial does permit a scar
to fester and resurface, being
ever close; away, not far!

But journeys are enhanced when we
observe, along the way, each sight,
instead of speeding blindly forth
to get somewhere we find then, trite!

So faster isn't better, no!
A short term answer may appeal
but plodding slowly through the pain
can help us grow and learn and heal!

Perspectives, new are present, then.
These vistas, I'm allowed to see!
More doors are being opened up;
new windows now are facing me!

And these are gifts; so ne'er forget
how things were 'fore they were received!
This helps enhance the gratefulness
at ev'ry instance it's perceived!

And one successful strategy
was reconnecting with the joy
I felt that day and not allow
the chapter, next to hit--annoy! *

The other was to skip on past
the painful era; re-a-lize
the time it jumped to was a treat;
a blessing Yes! a lovely prize! **

But there's a place amid these two
and fin'lly I can see this spot!
An angle once just missing, lost
is now revealed; it's hidden, not!

And what's contained in that locale,
that's lying somewhere in between;
the sense to feel the gratefulness
because, so much, that time did mean.

So, don't just stop; cut short the muse
or hop to where there's joyous mirth!
Some digging can expose a place
containing value, pleasure--worth!

It was a gift, the time we shared
and sort'a, I can sense, now this!
It was a prize to feel her love.
I'm grateful, it, I didn't miss!
