I Was A Friend

The other night, I gazed above;
one spark'ling star, it shone!
What happened next? Reminders of
how my perspective's grown!
twirling star graphic (2K)
Where once, this glit'tring spectacle
just sparked sad mem-o-ries.
I now feel thoughts acceptable!
Not just pain-filled, are these!

I wrote about the feelings stirred
when this scene, my eyes, met.
Oh! for so long, all's that occurred
was sadness, hurt, regret!

I penned my honest feelings when
"The Wishing Star", I wrote.
The heavens brought me back again
and here's from it, a quote:

"You'd always point it out to me,
that first star, when in view.
You'd make a wish then squeeze my hand,
so sure t'would now come true!"

"Still holding hands, you'd look at me.
"It's true!" You would explain!
Our eyes would meet and I'd respond,
"Colette, that's just a plane!"

Thereafter when that speck shone high,
...just felt I acted so
short-sighted! How inept was I
t'just let my wit to show,

instead of showing gratitude;
enjoying what she shared!
I felt my comments dumb and rude
while skyward hence, I stared.

But recently, that body, bright
I saw above the earth
and sensed a dif'frent angle, quite!
My conduct held some worth!

I wasn't just a crass ingrate!
A tease sometimes offends
but it can also indicate
how close two are as friends.

I've never sensed this till that eve;
the angle, fully hid.
That star had caused me just to grieve
when my acts...recall did.

I shared with her, whenever I
concluded that the light
was not a star a'twinklin' high;
it was a plane, in flight.

So, when my comments, I did give
about that spark up there
I wasn't being negative.
My point of view, did share.

Ah, suddenly I do now feel
my conduct...can defend.
I acted open, honest, real;
that's how you treat a friend.
