Edibles of Albia

_________

This information was compiled from the C2 Scriptorium put on the web by Slink at Slink's Burrow Online (Creatures section now removed), and would not have been possible without her hard work; some examination of files with a hex editor was done for areas that were missed. Also, thanks to Amethyst (I lost your URL - E-mail me!) for her efforts in cataloguing Albian items and for inspiring this with her Picture Guide to C2 Albia, and to Kelly for contributing some information on fruit names and some missing nutrient data!

It's important for your norns (and grendels and ettins!) to have a balanced diet for good health. But so many of the edible items in Creatures 2 have been provided without giving us any idea of what they might contain. Numerous unnamed fruits are scattered everywhere. Are your norns missing out on essential vitamins or nutrients? What should you do if your norn eats a rotten carrot when you don't even know what one contains?

This is an attempt to catalog the "edibles of Albia", and applies to the game as it is when a new world is started. No effects from official or third-party COBs or upgrades are here, though that may be a project for the future. I have made few notes about the actual effects of some of these chemicals, but am working on elaborating. For those that are not self-explanatory, please consult Lis Morris' The Palace of the Evil Shee; she has a chemicals list in her "Things for C2" section.

The edible items are listed according to the categories that CyberLife puts them in; thus, a rotten carrot is listed in the "detritus" category and not the "root" category. Categories are in alphabetical order. Each item is pictured, named (with an official, unofficial, or at least descriptive name), and has a list of effects. The number after each effect or nutrient is the amount of that chemical delivered; the maximum level is 255. Click on a category link below to jump to that section, or just scroll down the page to browse. Some of the names were given to the items by Slink or by other people in the online Creatures community; others came from CyberLife's documents (help file, manual, strategy book).

In this document, I tend to use the words "norn" and "creature" (meaning norn, grendel, or ettin) interchangeably - most of the time, a description of an item's effect on a norn will apply to the other two species as well. Any exceptions that I know about will be noted.

This is still being updated - please check back later too!

Badbug | Badplant | Bug | Critter | Detritus | Drink | Food | Fruit | Plant | Root | Seed

Badbug
 Ants
Hunger Decrease - 10
Fat - 10
Protein - 10

These may bite your norns if disturbed, causing pain - the creatures seem to love to pick up insects of any kind. However, they eat detritus which might otherwise make a norn ill if he eats some.

Badplant
 Gray Mushroom Caps ("Deathcap Mushroom")
Glycotoxin - 50

Found in various places around Albia, especially the swampy area between the garden and the base of the volcano. These seem to grow well in areas where there are few nutrients in the soil and little light, but are occasionally found among many other flourishing plants as well. Glycotoxin destroys stores of glycogen, which is a long-term energy source in creatures, and is what is measured in the health bar - if one of your norns eats a deathcap, expect the health bar to drop. From what Lis Morris of The Palace of the Evil Shee has said, ettins don't seem to be able to eventually counteract the effects of glycotoxin (unlike a healthy norn), and will suffer greatly from eating anything with glycotoxin in it. Arnica is the antidote to glycotoxin, so try giving Arnica Fruit or, if you have the Advanced Science Kit, an injection of arnica.

 "Nightshade" Berries
Pain Increase - 50
Sleep Toxin - 100
Tyrosine - 100
Triptophan - 100

Located on ivy-like vine on right side of rope bridge. Tyrosine and triptophan (in C2, not in real life) cause hallucinations of commands being given, items being nearby that really aren't, and so forth. A creature that eats this will react to things that really aren't there - watch his behavior carefully to be sure that nothing worse happens as a result.

 Sourgum Fruit
Cyanide - 100
Starch - 100
Alcohol - 255
Sleepiness - 100

Found on the same tree with the ashgum fruit, in a small biodome. Since cyanide is such a nasty poison (it destroys the 'energy' in the norn's system), this is very dangerous if eaten. Give the ashgum fruit as an antidote to the sourgum, if there's time, or if you have the Advanced Science Kit, inject the affected creature with sodium thiosulphite, cyanide's antidote.

Bug
 Hairy Caterpillar
Hunger Decrease - 10
Fat - 10
Protein - 10

Develops into one of the two butterflies in Albia; I've forgotten which.

 Smooth Caterpillar
Hunger Decrease - 10
Fat - 10
Protein - 10

Develops into one of the two butterflies in Albia; I've forgotten which.

Critter
 Zander Fish
Need For Pleasure Decrease - 75
Hunger Decrease - 150
Fat - 50
Protein - 150

The Zander fish eggs only hatch on the morning of the third day of autumn - watch out if you have hungry aquatic creatures gobbling them up too quickly! As a side note, this is the only food item that produces a Need For Pleasure decrease when eaten; perhaps it's fun for norns to scoop up and gulp down the squirming fish. They do leave bones behind after being eaten, but these bones can't be consumed. They're also a favorite food for the mysterious sea monster in the dark ocean...

Detritus
 Spoiled Carrot
Pain Increase - 50
Histamine A OR Fever Toxin - 100

Histamine A causes sneezing, while Fever Toxin produces hotness; it should be pretty obvious from the norn's symptoms which he is suffering from. For Fever Toxin, encourage the norn to drink plenty of fluids to keep the body temperature regulated, and try to lead him to a cooler area if possible. In bad cases, you could inject some Coldness with the Advanced Science Kit.

 Spoiled Pear Plant Fruit
Pain Increase - 40
Histamine B - 50

Histamine B produces coughing; try giving the cough medicine that comes in the Doctor section of the Health Kit.

 Spoiled Potato
Pain Increase - 50
Histamine A OR Fever Toxin - 100

Histamine A causes sneezing, while Fever Toxin produces hotness; it should be pretty obvious from the norn's symptoms which he is suffering from. For Fever Toxin, encourage the norn to drink plenty of fluids to keep the body temperature regulated, and try to lead him to a cooler area if possible. In bad cases, you could inject some Coldness with the Advanced Science Kit.

 Spoiled Triffid Fruit
Pain Increase - 50
Histamine A - 20
Histamine B - 20

Histamine A causes sneezing, while Histamine B produces coughing; try giving the cough medicine that comes in the Doctor section of the Health Kit.

 Spoiled Trumpet Fruit
Pain Increase - 100
Histamine A - 100
Histamine B - 80

Histamine A causes sneezing, while Histamine B produces coughing; try giving the cough medicine that comes in the Doctor section of the Health Kit.

Drink
 Seltzer Bottle
Water - 100

If you get both Object Packs from CyberLife's site, you can install a COB that will add Thirst Decrease as well.

 Pump
Water - 100

If you get both Object Packs from CyberLife's site, you can install a COB that will add Thirst Decrease as well. Also, these pumps tend to cause norns to hit their heads on them when they try to activate the pumps, making the norn eventually fear drinking. Try pushing the pump before the norn reaches it, or using COBs that are drinks instead of encouraging norns to use the pumps.

Food
 Cheese
Starch - 80
Fat - 20
Hunger Decrease - 50

Aside from a few pieces lying around in the incubator room, cheese is found only in a cheese dispenser near the second teaching computer.

 Honey
Starch - 100
Hunger Decrease - 100

Norns love slurping this up, but it's mostly "empty" calories; there's a lot of Starch and a lot of Hunger Decrease, so norns might fill up on this and get little nutrition. Use it as a snack for your norns, but encourage them to eat things with protein, fat, and vitamins too.

Fruit
 Arnica Fruit
Arnica - 100
Downatropin - 200
Starch - 50
Hunger Decrease - 50

Grow on a vine above the spider's web, above the calendar (a scroll with a number and a picture representing the season on it, registers as "mediabox"); between the dark ocean and the rope bridge. These can be confused with the Summer Foxfire Berries, which are larger and grow on the huge tree in the garden area. Arnica is an antidote to glycotoxin poisoning. Downatropin changes how a norn walks so that it is actually trying to walk downhill; your norn may stagger a bit after eating this, but is otherwise fine.

 Ashgum Fruit
Sodium thiosulphite - 200
Starch - 50
Hunger Decrease - 50
Water - 100

Found on the same tree with the sourgum fruit, in a biodome. Sodium thiosulfite is an antidote to cyanide, found in the sourgum.

 Bryonia Berries
Starch - 80
Hunger Decrease - 80
Prostaglandin - 50

Located on the bush just to the left of the rope bridge. Do not confuse these dark purple berries with the bright purple berries on the vine on the right side of the same bridge - see "Nightshade" Berries in the "Badplant" section. Prostaglandin is a beneficial chemical that heals organ damage in creatures.

 Cantharis Berries
EDTA - 100
Sodium thiosulfite - 100
Histamine A - 50
Starch - 50

Grow on a tree in the biodome that contains the Venus flytrap-like plant. EDTA is an antidote to poisoning by heavy metals; note that it will not be effective if the bone marrow has been destroyed by radiation poisoning (caused by hanging out in the volcano; check on the status of the "Bones" organ in the Science Kit). Sodium thiosulfite is an antidote to glycotoxin. This is a beneficial berry except for the presence of Histamine A, which causes sneezing.

 Coconuts
Starch - 100
Fat - 80
Protein - 70
Hunger Decrease - 100

Grow only on a palm tree on the island. These are especially good for females recovering from pregnancy because of their high content of fat and protein.

 Gelsemium Fruit
Starch - 50
Hunger Decrease - 30
EDTA - 200
Prostaglandin - 200

Only grows in an area just under the pier that's to the right of the dark ocean. Loses its effectiveness if off the plant for too long. EDTA is an antidote to poisoning by heavy metals; note that it will not be effective if the bone marrow has been destroyed by radiation poisoning (caused by hanging out in the volcano; check on the status of the "Bones" organ in the Science Kit). Prostaglandin helps heal damaged organs.

 Nuts
Starch - 100
Glucose - 30
Hunger Decrease - 80

A nut for planting can be found in the Health Kit, and also grows naturally near the Tantris Berries.

 Pear Plant Fruit
Starch - 100
Hunger Decrease - 150
Fat - 80

Mostly grow in the bottom "garden" area, and near the Tantris Berries. This will spoil eventually if left around for too long.

 Pulsatilla Berries
Hunger Decrease - 50
Starch - 50
Fat - 60
Protein - 60
Vitamin C - 20

Grow on a fern-like plant on the level below the calendar; between the dark ocean and the rope bridge. This is the only naturally-occurring food item that contains Vitamin C, which helps prevent organ decay.

 Summer Foxfire Berries
Water - 40
Starch - 100
Fat - 50
Hunger Decrease - 50

Grow on the huge tree over the large garden area in the "bottom" of Albia; often fall to the ground in the garden or onto the platforms above it.

 Tantris Berries
Hunger Decrease - 50
Starch - 50
Sex Drive - 30
Vitamin E - 100
Alcohol - 100

Grow on a tree in an area to the left of the waterfall, on the same level as the small pier and hanging chimes, on the level just above a small humpbacked wooden bridge. This is the only naturally-occurring food item to contain Vitamin E, which helps prevent organ decay, and is also a good fruit for encouraging mating.

 Tomatoes
Starch - 100
Glucose - 30
Protein - 30
Hunger Decrease - 100

One for planting can be found in the Health Kit, and can otherwise be found growing naturally near the Incubator Level's teleporter, or near the Tantris Berries.

 Triffid Fruit
Starch - 80
Hunger Decrease - 50

One of the few plants, besides the prickly cacti, that will grow in the desert - or nearly anywhere else with some light and soil. This will spoil eventually if left around for too long.

 Trumpet Fruit
Starch - 100
Fat - 100
Hunger Decrease - 150

Usually found growing on the "bottom" garden level. This will spoil eventually if left around for too long.

 Winter Foxfire Berries
Water - 40
Starch - 90
Protein - 30
Hunger Decrease - 30

Found in the garden in the "bottom" of Albia, mostly near the waterwheel on the left side of it. Grow on the large tree in winter, and appear to fall to the ground after the growing season.

Plant
 Mushrooms
Starch - 80
Fat - 20
Protein - 20
Hunger Decrease - 150

Scattered around Albia; main location is on the Incubator Level. If you get both Object Packs from CyberLife's site, you can install a COB that will change their classification to "fruit" - no other "plants" are edible, and this confuses norns. If mushrooms are consumed by "push" instead of "eat", the Fat is replaced by an equal amount of Alcohol for some odd reason; be sure to teach your norns to "eat" these, not "push".

Root
 Carrots
Hunger Decrease - 100
Starch - 100
Protein - 100
Water - 100

Nutritious food that is found growing in the bottom garden area - use the nearby carrot seed shooter to plant lots of carrots, and watch the rabbit appear! These seem to wither quickly, so be sure to encourage your creatures to "eat root" while they're still fresh, and try to get rid of any rotten ones. They also grow well in the incubator area, in front of the computer.

 Potatoes
Hunger Decrease - 100
Starch - 100
Protein - 100
Water - 100

Yes, they look more like some odd tropical root plant, but they're potatoes. Again, very nutritious, and may last longer than carrots, but be sure to remove rotten ones or let the ants have them. Grow best in the garden area, just to the right of the anthill.

Seed
 Pear Flower Seed
Starch - 60
Fat - 40
Hunger Decrease - 30

Bouncy little seeds that are produced by Pear Plants or by the Pear Plant "seed shooter".

 Spinnomosa Cactus Seed
Starch - 50
Fever Toxin - 5
Hunger Decrease - 50

These are produced by the appropriate type of "seed shooter", or by the Spinnomosa Cacti during a certain season of the year. The little fins on the top allow these to waft along on the wind and disperse to nearby areas. They can be picked out of the ground soon after they "land" and disposed of in an ocean, etc. Fever Toxin causes hotness, so encourage the norn to drink plenty of fluids to keep the body temperature regulated, and try to lead him to a cooler area if possible. In bad cases, you could inject some Coldness with the Advanced Science Kit.

 Triffid Seed
Starch - 50
Fat - 50
Hunger Decrease - 50

These seeds are encased in a little protective bubble (as pictured) when they are ejected from the Triffid "seed shooter"; this bubble will audibly pop not too long afterwards, and the seed will fall to the ground.
