Undergraduate section

  • As listed in the catalog, this meets 5:30-6:30 on Tuesdays. The location is Sever 208. It is run by the teaching assistant (Elaine).
  • Elaine's office hours will be held in the same room immediately following, from 6:30-7:30.
  • All students (undergrad and grad) are encouraged to attend this section. It covers topics directly related to the course and provides opportunities to get help on homework and material covered in class. It is also the venue for makeup quizzes: If you want to makeup a quiz you took during regular class, you must attend this section. (See the syllabus for details on quizzes and makeups.)

Graduate section

  • If you are taking the course for grad credit, you must attend a separate grad-credit section run by other people (not by me and Elaine). This section covers topics related to math pedagogy and is not directly related to material covered in Math E-10.
  • More information is available here or from Tom Judson.
  • Note that for those of you in Eric Towne's graduate section, you will met Thursdays from 4:45 to 5:45 in Sever 302, starting the second week of classes (February 7). More details for this particular graduate section are available here.

Office hours.

  • Eric's office hours be held during the hour before class in our regular class room, starting the second week (February 7). I will also be available to meet after class.
  • Elaine's office hours will immediately follow section, in Sever 208 from 6:30-7:30.

The text is Functions Modeling Change by Connally, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, et al., Second Edition (not the Third Edition!). Used copies are widley available online from Amazon and its ilk. Additionally, I will post chapters and solutions online.

The Math Question Center provides individual help to students in E-3, E-8, E-9, E-10, E-15, and E-16.

Grossman Library

The Extension school library is on the third floor of Sever Hall, and makes computers, copiers, and printers available to students (as well, of course, as books, a quiet work space, and other library eservices).

Computers.

Student computers are also available at the Church Street Computer Facility and at the Science Center computer lab.

Older Announcements

2008-05-14 Wed

  • For our last office hours, Thursday 5/15, we will have SEVER 303 (upstairs from our regular classroom). Our regular classroom frees up at 5:15 but students finishing their exams will probably be milling around for awhile.

2008-04-18 Fri

  • Eric will be away next week (4/20–27). He won't have reliable email access.
  • Eric's regular thursday office hours are cancelled.
  • Elaine will hold section & her Tuesday office hours as usual.
  • Elaine will review material for Thursday's exam (Exam 2 Makeup) during the first part of class.
  • Elaine will proctor the exam, and grade it with Eric when he gets back.

2008-03-17 Mon

  • I have posted notes for the remainder of the term (class 8–13).
  • I have posted a slightly revised syllabus.

2008-03-13 Thu

  • Interesting video that trys to explain Moebius transformations. These are sort of generalized transformations of the sort we discussed tonight (Class 7), except they apply to functions of complex numbers. They are way out of our purview but still fun to think about.

2008-03-10 Mon

  • I have posted a few problems on shifts and reflections in a revised class 6 handout.

2008-02-12 Tue

  • Unfortunately, Eric has to cancel his office hours on Thursday February 21 (Class 4) owing to a schedule conflict.

2008-02-08 Fri

  • Eric's office hours are finalized for Thursdays 5 to 6 pm in Sever 202, i.e., the hour before class in our regular classroom.

2008-02-07 Thu

  • Read about how Celsius and Fahrenheit came up with their temperate scales. Wikipedia also has an extensive writeup. Also interesting is that Celsius's original scale was upside down (0 being hot, 100 being cold).

2008-02-04 Mon

2008-02-03 Sun

  • This week only (February 5), Elaine's office hours will end at 7 (instead of 7:30), owing to a scheduling conflict. This means she'll be in Sever 208 from 5:30 to 7:00 for section and office hours.

2008-01-31 Thu

  • I have posted an updated syllabus. It includes a complete exam and homework schedule. Note that this schedule is subject to change.
  • I have also posted some review materials from the Spring 2006 version of Math E-10. Keep in mind that E-10 changes from term to term. Thus, while hopefully useful, these materials are not necessarily an accurate reflection of the quizzes and exams you will take.
  • Finally, I have posted notes for Class 1. I will try to post notes each week consisting of problems similar to ones I intend to cover in class. Sometimes I will work problems directly from these handouts, as will Elaine in section.

2008-01-30 Wed

  • Undergraduate section will meet Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 in Sever 208, with office hours from 6:30 to 7:30 in the same room.
  • For those of you in Eric Towne's graduate section (not undergrad), you will met Thursdays from 4:45 to 5:45 in Sever 302, starting the second week of classes (February 7). More details for this particular graduate section are available here.
