Four Winds Hat Pattern & Braid Kit
The Four Winds Hat has it's origins with the Sami people who followed their reindeer herds across the borders of Norway, Sweden and Finland. The name, the hat of the four winds, comes from the fact that living within the Arctic Circle so near the North Pole, the winds do converge and come from all four directions at times. This hat like many ethnic folk styles have several variations. The Norwegian Sami wear a hat that has the ``Four Winds" portion made in red or black with the band usually in red. The Finnish Sami usually wear a hat that is in shades of royal or navy blue. Both styles have a wide headband that is covered with multiple rows of braid and rick rack and have 8 felt streamers hanging down over the shoulder. We have seen pictures of some older Swedish Sami who have head bands that are 6" to 9" tall and they look like stove pipes with the Four Winds portion hanging down behind. Our pattern is recommended to be made in polar fleece type fabrics.
