Objective: Taking the first letter of your last name, select an interesting font and use Adobe Illustrator to slice the letter into its component pieces. Create a balanced composition using two of those pieces. The result will then be tiled with itself to create a larger composition using a strict grid lay-out. Analysis: This project was an assignment for a foundation digital design course at DePaul University. The piece above is the initial tile generated using two components of the first letter of my last name. By varying the scale and grouping these components into asymmetrical, positive and negative relationships an interesting composition was formed. This tile was very well-received by my classmates even though it was completely hidden in the resulting tiled grid (see Grid Organization 2).
