Design Projects > Line Shape Field
 |
Objective:
- In this assignment, we were to divide a solid,
black field using 3 lines.
- The lines were only permitted to cross
each other in a single spot and were supposed to move across the
field from right to left.
- The resulting pieces were then arranged
on a white field of exactly twice the area of the first, creating
an equal mixture of positive (black) and negative (white) space.
- We were then to fill in all of the white areas to create a completely
black field again.
- The resulting pieces were once again to be
arranged on a white field twice the size of last one.
- The end
result of this project can be seen in two other designs on this
site: "Storm Over Baghdad" (my first draft) and "Jagged
Motion" (my final revision).
|
Analysis:
- This project was an assignment for a foundation
digital design course at DePaul University.
- I used curved, angled
and "stair-stepped" lines to divide the black field and
then arranged them to incur minimal overlap. The result was some
very interesting shapes, especially the "coffee pot" and
"dove" shapes.
- The instructor was pleased that I "pushed"
the composition to achieve interesting shapes, but felt that I could
have refined the composition further.
