30 Years of Service to Boston-Area Churches

Nancy spent the year after earning her MDiv degree at a church agency, City Mission Society, in Boston. After the death of her niece Julia, she worked six years with critically ill children at Boston's Floating Hospital, then two more as an acute care health planner focusing on compassionate staffing, such as language interpreters. During those years she was a Deacon at Church of the Covenant in Boston, where she was ordained in 1981.

Like most of the churches Nancy has served, the Church of the Covenant is a blended parish, associated with both the UCC and the Presbyterian church.

The United Parish in Auburndale (Newton, Mass.) is UCC and Methodist, and the First Parish in Lincoln, where Nancy was Senior Minister for more than ten years, is UCC and Unitarian-Universalist.

Nancy's interim experience began with a part-time position in Woburn, Mass., during an independent study at Harvard. "That situation worked so happily and was so transformative for the congregation that I accepted three more interims," Nancy said. They were in Waban (part of Newton), Melrose, and Salem.

The churches Nancy has served presented a host of challenges: sexual misconduct, serious staff conflict, hidden and troublesome histories, and what seemed to be terminal decline. All of them recovered during her ministry, emerging healthier and more hopeful. Attendance increased in each church while she was there.
