Performance
Speaking Tongues are performance evenings which explore the diverse uses of the English languages by writers and performance artists writing and publishing in English. At a time when the culture of this country is changing as the result of shifting populations, our perception of American culture is also transforming. This is reflected by the way writers and performers are introducing new uses of the language. Speaking Tongues examines how writers of diverse backgrounds who are writing in English are influenced by other cultures and how that changes their creative use of the English language. Each evening is organized by one writer, around a specific idea. Each will select the other writers/performers for that evening. These may include poets, historians, performance artists musicians etc. Speaking Tongues will be an ongoing series.
In January, Speaking Tongues presented Sud-ac‡/Sudaca conceived by Papo Colo and Guillermo Gomez-Pea, performed with Keith Anton Mason. It uses the installation of The Hybrid State exhibition as the inspiration for the performance. and the notion of the hybrid between North and South America. The second night presented Pinoy Tok (Filipino Tok) conceived and hosted by Jessica Hagedorn. The evening explored the Filipino experience for those now living in New York. Performed by Thought Music (Hagedorn, Laurie Carlos, Robbie McCauley) and Ching Gonzalez, Ramon Hodel, Nicky Paraiso, Ching Valdes, Roberto Villaneuva.
